So the big question of the day was “why is the pool so cloudy?” For reasons no one could figure out the pool’s visibility was less than spectacular. It didn’t stop anybody from getting in, but it slowed us down a little. Since this pool is usually very clear and wonderfully sparkling on a regular basis I figured we could give it a pass for being a little gross just one time. Plus I’ve been out of the water since Saturday for various reasons so I really needed to get wet. We started with 3 swimmers but by the end of the warm up we were at 5 with a 6th still to show up later.

The warm up was mellow, but the main set in the middle turned out to be an ass kicker! Everything in that set was with fins on in the understanding that you’d actually kick and go fast in them. I celebrated by going out entirely too fast on the first 100. I knew it as soon as I started, but once I lock into a pace it’s hard for me to drop it. I finished like 5 or 6 seconds ahead of Mike which let me know I went out way to fast and was about to pay for it in the rest of the set. By the end of the first round I was huffing and puffing pretty severely. The intervals gave me some healthy amounts of rest, but I just couldn’t reset my body inbetween send offs. I made it all the way through the set, but I’m pretty sure my stroke was fairly horrible towards the end there!

I won’t be underwater tomorrow because I’ve got work all day and then a Surfrider meeting to go check out, but I should be back in Santa Maria for some sprinting on Saturday and then the ocean on Sunday.

I’m in town this weekend and I had heard one of my Santa Maria swim buddies was thinking about swimming on Saturday to do some sprints for time as part of his training for USMS SCY Nationals in a few months. I sent him an email asking if he minded an extra swimmer to help push him a little and I was advised to “bring it.” Excellent :)

I drove down around lunchtime and the weather is starting to turn on us around here a little. It was overcast and a little colder than it has been, sounds like we may even be back into rain tomorrow… boo… upside was almost no one else was at the pool. Me, Mike, and Christy all got our own lanes to swim in and they all had starting blocks set up on them.

We went through an extended warm up of about 1600 yards and then worked on figuring out how to do our sprints. We did all out 50′s from a dive on 2:00. To ensure we had someone to start us and get times we had one person cycle out each round to run the “heats.” So we started with me vs. Mike, then Mike vs. Christy, Christy vs. me and so on until we all did 5 50′s.

I swam a couple fly, a couple free and one breast stroke. My first 50 was around 27 which is ok for just messing around in practice, but if I want to catch up to myself from last year I’ll need to get that closer to 25! Things got slower from there, but didn’t drop off too hard. It was fun to have some mini races with these guys. It was especially nice to have Christy in the mix because I haven’t seen her in the pool forever due to her job taking her out of town. Now that I know this pool is open on Saturdays at lunch I might have to do this more often!

After I got home I decided to add a little bike ride to my day just to get in some bonus activity. I geared up and set out with not much of an idea of where I wanted to go. I knew I wanted to get to Pismo for a peek at the ocean, beyond that it was just what ever happened would happen.

Out at the beach I got what is probably a preview of tomorrow’s ocean swim… chop city. Something is creeping this way across the ocean and it already has the water stirred up. We have a 50% chance of rain for tomorrow, I’m hoping it at least holds off until later in the day so that I have people to swim with me.

I’m no super cyclist so I only rode about 10.5ish miles, I had intentions of about 12 but the way I was going to take home had a bike detour on it which led me to turn earlier than intended. It felt good to spend some more time outside. The air was a little cool which kept me comfortable and only a few people tried to hit me with their cars so that was good :)

Another beautiful day for a swim this afternoon which was good because I wasn’t feeling so good and needed a little motivation to get out of the office (besides Saturday’s impending One Hour Swim!). I’ve been having a hard time getting excited about pool swimming recently, but when it’s outdoors and the weather is like this it’s hard to say no! There were 4 of us swimming today and I got to stretch out in my own lane which is always a bonus.

I popped out a little bit early today because I had a project sitting on my desk at work that I had to go do something about, but I still got in like 95% of the workout. I liked that we had some fly built in there today, I’m anticipating a lot of it between here and SCY nationals since Mike is aiming for the 200 fly this year! Maybe I’ll have to swim it too… we’ll see :)

In other news… I’m now officially Red Cross certified in CPR and First Aid! 100% on all my tests, look out! The classes were pretty decent but didn’t really go far enough for me. My Army first aid training was far more hands on and practical, but they also had days at a time to make us do it over and over and over again. I think I want to go back and get some Lifeguard training and maybe a more advanced first aid class. I just want to feel like if something bad happened at the beach I could make a meaningful difference in the outcome by knowing what to do while waiting for the pros to show up. The basic classes were a good start, but I wouldn’t mind being a little more competent in this area.

From here I’ve got plans to hit a CVMM workout tomorrow night and then do the USMS One Hour Swim with them on Saturday Morning. Since I’ll be in SoCal anyways… I’m going to spend the night in Orange Country and get in a Sunday morning ocean swim with some of my Laguna Beach open water friends!

I took a few days off after my big Polar Bear Swim to relax (minus a big workout consisting of 100m swim and 25 minutes in the hot tub on Sunday), but I started to get back to work this afternoon. I’m still in contemplation mode as far as what my next big goal swim is, but I know it’s going to be long so I better start swimming!

Today wasn’t a big workout but we worked the main set pretty hard. Gotta have those shorter intense days interspersed in the week right? We were 5 swimmers deep today and nobody really had a plan so I made up a set after we did our stock warm up. It’s fair to say it was met with a little hesitation… you know the set is a good one when everyone stalls for a second but doesn’t want to be the first one to complain about it :) I think everybody liked it once they were done though, if you’re only going to swim 2200 yards you might as well make it worth it! I just liked that I got to do strokes other than freestyle just to move my joints in new directions.

The intervals were a little loose to give everybody a chance to make it and most of us held together through the set. i would have liked to do one more round but we didn’t really have the time. I think starting next week we’ll have actual workouts planned for here through SCY Nationals in Mesa. We’ve got some people interested so Mike planned out the next few months for us to get prepped.

double mustache... it's like a double rainbow but far less desirable

In other news… thank you to everybody that has shared my polar bear swim story on their blogs and facebook pages, sent me congratulations, watched today’s Morning Swim Show segment, and made donations! I’m totally bowled over at how much good coverage the swim got, and as an added bonus it gave me a chance to do some good in my neighborhood. We raised what’s looking to be about $1500+ for the SLO Food Bank! You can still donate through Friday if you’re so inclined. I’m pretty stoked that on top of locals donating I’ve had dollars come from Washington State, Chicago, New York, and even Moscow! I think there’s a very real possibility this swim will go down again next year but I’ll have a little company :)

And randomly… I’m looking for a surfboard… I want to learn how to ride this year so if anybody has a lead on a cheap (like sub $300) used board that large gentleman/beginner appropriate in the central coast area I’d appreciate it! As long as it’s reasonably solid and I don’t have to fix anything I’m in, don’t care if it’s ugly as long as it works!

I guess the upside to me doing more solo pool swims in the dark during the winter is that you guys get a lot more random water based art from the internet :) Anyways, I’m getting excited for my New Year’s Day swim! I’ve got 4 days left to get ready and I can’t wait to get this show on the road. After a week of major rainfall all over the state we seem to slowing down with the waterworks. The forecast calls for a little rain on Wednesday but then we’re dry until the weekend. Naturally it’s supposed to rain on the day of my swim, but that shouldn’t be a big problem for me. It’s not the rain I’m worried about, it’s the runoff and if it starts that morning I’ll be out and dried off before there’s any potential problems.

Tonight I went out to Kennedy to get in a shorter swim, but I wanted it to be a solid effort. I put in 2500m and tried to really work the whole thing. I tried to be aggressive on all my 100′s and maintain a faster than usual pace for anything longer than that.

I’ve got a swim with Niel planned out for tomorrow that I’m pretty stoked about. We’re venturing back into the ocean after a prolonged absence due to all the rain. I think it should be reasonably clean out there by now, plus I just really need to get in. A big part of this 10k is cold water tolerance and it’s hard to maintain that in warm health club swimming pools!

I thought this had a very nostalgic "Wonder Years" kind of vibe :)

The pool I swim at in Santa Maria opened back up today after a couple weeks of closure only to be closed again tomorrow… as much as I’m bummed I can’t get wet tomorrow I am stoked I had somewhere to swim for lunch today. The sun was at least halfway out and it wasn’t raining so that was pretty awesome.

Unfortunately none of my regular swim buddies were out today to workout with me. I think most of everybody is out of town somewhere. I made up my own workout as I went along. I did 1500 yards in a structured format and then like 1000ish just swimming with my SwiMP3 on.

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to swim tomorrow with the ocean all dirty and holiday pool hours but I do have some plans to be at the beach. A couple of us are going out for a little beach clean up day in Avila. I figure it’ll need one after a week of storms. If you’re in the area and you want to help out feel free to drop in Friday morning at 9am on the south side of the pier in Avila Beach! More info over at SwimAvila.com

You all may have noticed it’s raining a bit and whenever it rains in California it’s pretty much the end of the world. Normally I don’t mind a little weather, I don’t like it, but being a native Wisconsinite I know it could be much much worse. This series of storms is crapping me out though. Today was the first day I’ve seen the sun in a while and that was just bits and pieces through the clouds. The part that really sucks though is the ocean is pretty much closed for business at the moment. So much rain has come down that it’s overpowered sewer systems and flushed a lot of excreme… er, let say “excitement” into local waters, yuck. They’re advising people avoid the ocean until like Sunday. So all this killed this past weekend’s swim and the ocean swim I wanted to get in today. I really hope Sunday is swimmable, well that and I hope someone else comes out to swim with me! I really need some ocean time to get ready for this 10k I’ve got in the very near future.

Tonight I got myself out to swim at Kennedy for a while. I went early enough that things were set up for SCM and the rain came back as I was driving up. It was pretty cold on deck and the rain itself was really frosty, the pool however was nice and toasty. Although I don’t like rain very much I do like the feeling of cold rain on my bald head while swimming in a warm pool… it’s odd but pleasant :)

I hopped in and swam until they started to move the bulkhead back to LCM. I showed up with no real plan so I defaulted to a favorite short course set and repeated for as long as I could. I would have stayed in longer and knocked out a few more rounds but they kinda stole my wall!

Afterwards I got in some quality hot tub time before finding my way in to SLO for some dinner and last minute shopping. Word on the street is my Santa Maria pool is opening back up tomorrow so hopefully I can get in a swim with my friends there Thursday and maybe even Friday if they’ll be open!

the FINIS Foil Monofin

I got an exciting package today at the office from FINIS with one of their new all rubber Foil Monofins in it. The Foil doesn’t really hit the streets until late January, but I got my hands on one a little early to try out. As a monofin enthusiast I was pretty stoked about this! I’m told when they start to sell them they’re going to be yellow! I might have to buy an extra one later just for the color :)

Anyways… despite the wind and rain and cold I had to go to the pool tonight to check it out! I swam about 300m of my warm up with it on to get a feel for it. The first thing that I found real exciting is how easy it is to get on compared to the normal fiberglass bladed monofins. I could get this on in under 20 seconds where my shooter monofin requires a minute or two to get into. The other bonus is no sharp edges to worry about, you could stuff a whole bunch of people in the same lane with these things on and nobody is going to get hurt if there’s a collision between a blade and a swimmer. While swimming there’s a definite difference in the feel and feedback you get from the rubber blade. It’s not as powerful but it still generates plenty of speed and works your muscles pretty hard. I put it back on later in my workout, and I’m still exploring how I feel about it all. First impressions are I dig it and I think at the price point (about $60) this could end up being pretty popular. I’ll have to bring both of my monofins to the pool to do a little side by side test sometime in the near future…

The rest of my workout was pretty uneventful. I had music going for the whole thing and intermittently I’d get waves of the sound of big cold rain drops landing on my bald head.

After my workout I stopped at the grocery store and was reminded of why I’m never tasked with shopping for the household… I left with tortilla chips, cake, donuts, ice cream, pretzels, mini-donuts, and a pack of gum… haha, whoops. Note to self, don’t go to the grocery store immediately after working out.

Check out my fancy workout conveyance device... it doubles as a water bottle :)

I had a pretty hard time getting out of the house today. I felt magnetically attached to my couch… creating enough forward momentum to break free of it’s gravitational pull took some doing. I eventually wrote a workout and packed my swim bag and was out the door around 7:30 and in the pool about 5 to 8.

I grabbed an empty lane along the edge of the pool and got to work. After my warm up and kick set I put on my SwiMP3 to get me through a big 2000m set. That thing is really helpful on nights where I’m out there solo trying to get through a lot of distance.

Tomorrow I think I’m going to the ocean to swim, but I’m not sure if anyone else is going to join me. Niel can’t go so I’ll have to bug a few other people to see if they’re interested. The pool I swim at in Santa Maria is closed all week so I have to come up with an alternative plan for my lunchtime swim… we’ll see where I end up.

I was in for just a quick swim tonight. I got in to SLO around 6:30 for an LCM swim. They move the bulkhead at about 6:30 on Fridays so I had a little while to chill out. I opted for a trip to the hot tub while they worked on that. I like the hot tub :)

Anyways about 15/20 minutes later I had to transition to the real pool. My buddy that was a maybe to swim with me had to bail, but his excuse was excellent so that’s ok. I had a lane to myself and wasn’t looking to go too far tonight. I just wish I would have had the foresight to charge my SwiMP3 during the day so I would have had some music for the swim. It’s plugged in right now so my next solo swim won’t be so silent!

This was pretty much just a cruise through it sort of swim save a couple fast 100′s. I wanted to focus a little on how I was swimming. Since I swim without a coach on deck most of the time it’s on me to make sure my stroke is roughly where it should be.

Not sure that I’ll be in a pool tomorrow, but I will be on the water. I’ll be up the road a little ways in Morro Bay for some Standup Paddleboarding in the morning, it should be fun! If the waves are big like they were on Thursday I might even go bodysurfing at some point too.
