I swam with a Masters group at the South West YMCA in Greenfield just outside of Milwaukee this morning. Jim who swims with the group and reads the blog gave me an open invitation aways back so I made sure to let him know I was coming to town so I could drop in and swim with him. He got me all set up with a pass so that I could come in and workout  with him and the rest of the group.

The pool is a pretty normal for a nicer newer YMCA pool… really shallow on one end, narrow lanes, and waaay too hot for swimmers. It’s a nice pool, it’s just not set up with the more competitive swimmer in mind. The one big surprise was that it’s a meter pool! I was not expecting a SCM workout at all so that was cool.

We had a pretty good crowd and the workout was just what I needed. Mondays are their more distance focused day which is good because I had a whole weekend of swimming to get out of my system! Here’s the workout I did:

200 swim
100 kick

200 catch up drill

1400 swim (150 swim, 50 kick)

12 x 75 free (descend 1-3)

600 IM

3400 meters total

I felt pretty strong towards the beginning but I have to admit that heat and stuffy indoor pool air got to me. It’s a hard thing to adjust too when you get to swim outside everyday. Upside to swimming indoors though is I can hold a straight line in backstroke thanks to the lines on the ceiling!

After the workout I hung out in the pool for a bit and talked to the coach who leads the group. He gave me the run down on what they’re all about and the big range of swimmers they have. The group is more fitness focused but they do have triathletes and even a swimmer who has been to trials. Anyone can swim with them, they just have to sign up for the class through the Y.

Once I got out of the Y I ran into one of the guys from the workout in the parking lot and he invited me out to breakfast with him. So I got to hang out for a little while and chat before running home to the hotel. Now I need to finish packing and start making my way towards the airport. I’ll be back in California tonight and I should be in the pool in Santa Maria tomorrow!

Finished up the Wisconsin State Masters Meet today and had a ton of fun! I swam 3 events plus an exhibition relay with my fellow Californians and had some pretty good times in the process. I’d like to start off by pointing out that yours truly is the 25-29 State Champion in 5 different events… in the amount of context I’ve given you that should be fantastically impressed… I’d like to leave out that in a few of those races I was first and last in my age group.

my winnings from the weekend!

I started today with the 50 fly. I had a pretty decent race but it wasn’t great. I guess I was a little groggy still. I swam a mid 26 which is about par for the course for me this season. I’m still hoping to break into the 25s this year.

Not too long after I was back up on the blocks for the 100 freestyle. I was a little tired still when I got up on the blocks but I really wanted to get out a good race. I tried to work my start as much as possible and dolphin kicked out pretty far. By the time I got to the 3rd turn I was feeling pretty rough. I kicked out everything I had left in the last 25 and came in at a 56.13. I really wanted a 55 but I guess that’s close enough. If nothing else it’s a best time! I’ve got a few more shots at it in yards before the season’s over.

My last individual event was the 200 fly. After unsuccessfully trying to find an excuse to not swim it I gave up and just did it! I was seeded right next to Mike from Mission Viejo and my major goal was to stay ahead of him. Our 100 times are pretty close together and I know he has a pretty good 200.  I took out my first 100 at as mellow of a pace as I could so I wouldn’t die on the second one. Mike started pulling up on me during that 3rd 50. I tried to pick it up as much as I could but I was running out of steam. I managed to hold him off but he got pretty close! I swam a 2:22 which is a best time by default since I’ve never swam it before in short course yards.

Mike and David before the Californian Medley Relay

Pretty soon after that I was behind the blocks for my last race of the day, the 200 medley relay. Since we were an exhibition relay (4 swimmers from 4 different teams, same LMSC though) we decided to modify the medley format a bit… our relay was all butterfly! Me, Mike and Julie are all butterflyers so instead of finding a backstroker and breaststroker we just went all fly :) Our relay actually turned out pretty solid despite the 3 of us just having done the 200 fly. We swam like 1:58ish. Everyone was pretty happy with their swims and David, our only non-flyer, swam a pretty hot time as well and was pretty stoked that he could do that in a fly event.

Afterwards me and Mike and Julie hit Culver’s one more time just to make sure we got our fill of the local fatty goodness. I followed that up with some time visiting family. Tomorrow I’ll be up early swimming with a local masters team and then flying back to California!

Schroeder Aquatics Center (click for a bigger version)

I swam day one of the Wisconsin Masters State Meet at the Schroeder Aquatic Center today and had a really good time. As you would expect the meet was no where near as big as what we have in California, but there were still around 150 swimmers entered and the meet had a really good vibe. I swam here as a kid and I was really excited to take another crack at this pool as an adult.

I got in right as warm up opened just to wake myself up and get loose. I had a looooong 48 hours preceding the meet and really needed to get wet to regain my bearings. My friends Mike and Julie from Pasadena were at the pool today as well which was pretty cool. Along with us 3 Californians the meet had visitors from Illinois and Iowa.

Random action!

My first race and the first event of the day was the 50 freestyle. I went into this one without much expectation since I wasn’t sure what my body felt like doing today. Even though the official was very fast through the starting process (I never really got all the way set), I did get a really good start. The blocks at this pool are really nice! I charged pretty hard on the first 25 and probably took one more breath than I should have. On the way  back I definitely took too many breaths but I was kicking like a mad man! When I hit the wall I had no idea what my time was. The pool has a really great digital scoreboard but at the angle I was at and the lack of glasses on my head I couldn’t read anything. Eventually when the results were posted I found out that I swam a new best time! I trimmed about 8 100ths off my previous best!

At this point I thought I had a while until my next race. As luck would have it I had a surprise relay to attend to! Between me, Mike, Julie and David (who is registered with SPMA but lives in Wisconsin) we had a full SoCal exhibition relay! Only problem was nobody really knew it was going to happen. We’d talked about it but never finalized any plans. So when they announced the California relay over the loud speaker we all scrambled behind the blocks! I swam the anchor spot and swam this 50 free really relaxed. I swam it even faster than I had earlier as an individual event. This time I swam more like 25.2. I realize relay starts will do that, but I was still stoked about it!

My big event of the day was the 100 fly. I was in the second to last heat in lane 4. I had a really good start and underwater. After the race the guy in the lane next to me complimented me on my underwaters and said it encouraged him to go faster (which was good for him but bad for me seeing as he beat me!). I tried to take the first 50 out fast but relaxed. I came in around 27 seconds. The second 50 went pretty smoothly I thought. I came in at 59.30 which isn’t a best time but it’s in the neighborhood. I was hoping to dip under 59 but apparently I’m saving that for another meet. My friend Lindsay who I swam with in Oconomowoc the last time I was in Wisconsin caught the whole thing on tape for me. Check it out…

I finished up with the 50 breaststroke probably no more than 10 minutes after the fly. I was hurting a little bit but not too bad. I went really deep on my start and I’m not sure if that was a bad thing or not. I tried to focus on having fast hands and getting to the wall as fast as I could! I’m honestly not sure what my time was because I couldn’t read the board. I’ll find out tomorrow. Regardless it was good practice for next weekend when I swim the 5o and the 100 breast in Pleasanton. I need to bring my breaststroke A game for that one since my friend Sarah has already started trash talking me about it :)

After the racing was done for the day I hung out a little bit and talked to some people for a while, then me and Mike and Julie ran across the street for a local delicacy, Culver’s. Mmmmm butter burgers…. Hamburgers and ice cream are pretty much the best answer to any post-meet hunger!

delicious!

Tomorrow I’m swimming 3 events and probably a relay. I have the 50 fly, 100 free and the 200 fly to contend with. With that said, it’s almost 8pm here and I’m probably on the verge of falling asleep… I might succumb to that urge… or find more junk food to ensure I can repeat tomorrow with some good swims!

made sure to buy a souvenir!

I got to Wisconsin on Friday morning after traveling all night and promptly started my newly patented “Milwaukee Taper Process.” So here’s what you need to do, first sleep about an hour on an airplane while flying overnight and eating the worst crap you can find in each airport (anything involving tacos, sausage or gummy candy is preferred). Next soak in some culture. I spent a couple hours at the Milwaukee Art Museum which is pretty awesome.

at the Milwaukee Art Museum... I wanted to push it in the lake and sail it!

My favorite piece of the day - two figures with stripe by Robert Motherwell

Afterwards I had some lunch at a Korean place in town with my buddy Too Much Metal Fred who made my rad swim parka last year. This lunch was followed with another lunch with my grandma and my aunt. Eating lunch twice is obviously important to going fast the next day.

After lunch number two I made my way over to my friend Peter’s house because we had plans to hit the Brewers game. Since this is Wisconsin you don’t just go to the game… you *have* to get at least a little drunk and grill in the parking lot… those are the rules. I had a brat and some MGD which is probably a sport drink to somebody.

at a tailgate party... that Miller Genuine Draft is in a camo can

At the game I may have had another brat and an adult beverage… and some waffle fries. Again, all key ingredients to correct tapering. Unfortunately the Brewers lost in the 9th inning, but it was fun to hang out in the bleacher seats. On a Friday night the cheap seats are the place to be. The only downside to the game is that it ran forever! I didn’t get to bed until like 1am after essentially being up since Thursday.

in the bleachers at Miller Park

With all the greasy food, lack of sleep, and beers you’d think I would bomb at my swim meet the next morning… not so! I started off with my best time in the 50 free! So I believe the Rob D. Milwaukee Taper Process has been scientifically proven to my satisfaction. I may apply this to my next travel meet assuming I can find bratwurst in Atlanta :)

I take off Thursday night for Wisconsin and I’ll be on the ground in Milwaukee somewhere around 9am. I’m looking for somewhere to swim Friday afternoon or Friday night in the Greater Milwaukee Area. I’m staying out towards Menomonee Falls/Germantown so preferably something out that way. Any teams around with a Friday evening workout? I’ve been looking online but so far my search hasn’t been particularly fruitful. Best I’ve found is 45 minutes of adult lap swim in Menomonee Falls at the junior high. If anybody has a lead for me please leave a comment or shoot me an email at rob@robaquatics.com! Thanks!

The Wisconsin Masters are having their state meet on the 10th and 11th of April and I’ve decided that it’s a perfect excuse to go visit the family and do some swimming! I’m going to make a 4 day weekend out of it. The big plan is to drink beer, eat fatty foods and swim fast!

I signed myself up for the 50 free/fly/breast, 100 fly, and the 200 fly. I’m excited to swim in Wisconsin, especially at Schroeder… it’s a fast pool! I swam a couple of state meets there as a kid and I did a workout there last year on my Midwest World Tour.

Seeing as I’m the first person to register for the meet I am the Wisconsin State Champion in everything! At least that’s what I’m telling myself :) I have a feeling that’s going to change shortly, but at least I was the fastest register… that’s gotta count for something right? So far I have 2 other Californians who are planning to come out which is pretty awesome! Who else wants to swim in the land of beer and cheese with me? You can register here.

Schroeder Aquatic Center

Tonight I went out and made sure to get a good start to February’s GTD numbers. I swam 4000 meters tonight at Kennedy.

200 swim
200 kick
200 pull

10 x 100 swim

7 x 200 kick/swim/pull by 200

2 x 500 swim

4000 meters total

Tonight was the last stop on the Wisconsin Leg of my Midwest Masters World Tour. I dropped in with the Elmbrook Masters team in Brookfield. I sent a few emails to the team last week and they were nice enough to let me drop in for an evening. Tonight they were swimming at Brookfield East High School and the pool was crowded! Lots of swimmers spread across about 6 lanes.

I could feel my early morning workout while I was in there, but I still had a lot of juice left. I thought that I was going to fade real hard but I managed to maintain a pretty healthy pace throughout the whole workout.

Here’s what we swam tonight:

400 warm up

4 x 25 drill IM order

Repeat x 3
50 drill @ 1:00
3 x 150 free

50 easy

300 dolphin kick w/ breaststroke arms w/ fins

300 IM broken by 50 @ 1:00

50 easy

2700 yards total

Tomorrow I leave for Illinois for some swimming and then off to the USAS Convention!

For those of you that have never been to Wisconsin… yes Oconomowoc is really the name of a place, I promise. I woke up super early and made my way out to the Pabst Farms YMCA to work out with a masters group there. I put the whole thing together via my twitter friend Lindsey. She was cool enough to let me drop in with them and to hook me up with a guest pass, thank you!

We got going at about 6am and it was a group led workout, no coach this morning. Everyone was on the same interval but the distance was split up into 3 different groups. I stuck with the middle distance set up since that’s what the majority of everyone else was doing plus I’m hitting another workout later today.

Here’s today’s workout:

300 warm up

Repeat x 3
50 @ 1:00
100 @ 2:00
150 @ 3:00
200 @ 5:00

Repeat x 2
4 x 50 kick @ 1:30
100 IM @ 2:30
4 x 25 kick @ :45
100 free
4 x 50 kick @ 1:30
1 x 100 IM @ 2:30

3000 yards total

The workout was pretty good and besides being really shallow on the one end, the pool was nice. I’ve only got one more stop on my Midwest World Tour before I move this show back down to Illinois again! I’m off to do Wisconsin-y things this afternoon until it’s time to go swim again in Brookfield.

Tonight I went out to the Schroeder Aquatic Center to swim with the masters group out there. I hadn’t been out there since age group state championships way back in probably 95 or 96. Originally I was going to swim in the morning but I ended up with a ticket to the U2 show down in Chicago the night before. My buddy Too Much Metal Fred that made my sweet swim parka hooked it up for me. The U2 show was nuts! I was down on the field in Soldier Field and the stage they have set up is basically a spaceship… but I digress…

I got down to the pool and found the office so I could pay to swim. It’s $10 for a one time drop in. We got going around 7 and the game plan was to do your own warm up until the workout was put up on the big board where they would normally show results. The workout was really good for me. I needed a good swim after doing Big Shoulders the other day. It was also nice that everyone was doing the same workout but not on the same pace. It gave me a chance to sand bag and talk with the coach a bit while I was getting warmed up. The girl that was coaching (Jess) was super nice and had a good eye for technique. She called me out for my high head position just like every other coach I know :)

I felt really good in the water, especially off the walls. Normally I don’t like bulkheads but I got some monster push offs in that pool tonight. The one thing that was sort of hard to get used to was swimming indoors. I forgot how hot and stuffy it can get in a big indoor pool like that.

Here’s tonight’s workout:

400 warm up

4 x 200 (kick, pull, drill, swim non-free)

Repeat x 4
2 x 50 catch up drill
2 x 50 kick

4 x 100 free @ 1:30
4 x 50 @ :50
3 x 50 @ :45
2 x 50 @ :40

6 x 25
1 x 25 easy
4 x 25 perfect stroke
1 x 25 easy
2 x 25 fast

4 x 75 (25 dolphin kick, 50 swim)

Tomorrow I have 2(!) swims planned. One with a team at the Y in Oconomowoc and then an evening workout with the Elmbrook masters in Brookfield. I’m also pretty stoked to have an open water workout in Illinois coming together on Wednesday. My Midwest World Tour is coming together pretty nicely :)

Earlier today I booked a flight for my trip to Chicago for Big Shoulders and the USAS Convention in September. Since there’s a few days in between the two events I’m going to make a run to Wisconsin to hang out with friends and family. I grew up outside of Milwaukee so it’s nice to go “home” every once and a while.

So here’s what I need to figure out… where are the masters workouts in South Eastern Wisconsin? I’m going to be based around Menomonee Falls for my stay, but I’m not scared of doing a little driving. I got a link to some workouts at the Schroeder Aquatic Center that I can do everyday if I need to, but I kind of want the Wisconsin Masters Sampler if I can work it out. I think it would be fun to swim with a few different groups while I’m there. I’ll be in Wisconsin with time to swim on the 14th-16th possibly the 13th.

I contacted my old age group team (Menomonee Fall Swim Club), but they don’t have a masters group at the moment. They were cool enough to offer me some lane space if they had it available, but I don’t want to eat up lane space and distract the kids from what they’re supposed to be doing.

If you have ideas for me or are on a team that wouldn’t mind a random dude dropping in for a day either leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail at rob@robaquatics.com – thanks!
