So this is either totally fun or the blog has completely jumped the shark :) I set up a Facebook Fan Page for the blog tonight. It’s one of those things that never really crossed my mind but Joel from the17thman put the idea in my head. And when I didn’t do it yesterday one of my swimmer friends on twitter asked where my fan page was so I figured I had to go do it!

I’m not totally sure where I’m going with this, but if you want to come along for the ride and see what happens you can become a fan here!

I was killing a little bit of time on Facebook and happened upon something kind of curious… videos of me swimming that I didn’t know existed! Highly unexpected! The SPMA Facebook Group has a whole bunch of videos from the Santa Clarita swim meet back in mid-May.

I found videos of my 50 fly, 50 free, & 50 breast. I really like seeing myself swim so that I can self diagnose some of the things I’m doing right and some of the things I’m doing wrong. If you’ve never seen yourself swim I highly recommend it, it’s very eye opening. And seriously it’s not that hard to get your hands on, practically everything takes video these days. I usually just use my digital camera.

If you were at the Santa Clarita meet go here and see if there is some video posted of any of your races. Even if you’re not a Facebook user you should be able to view this page and the videos.

If you are a Facebook user, here are a few good groups for you to check out:

  • SPMA Facebook Group
  • Pacific Masters Facebook Group
  • USMS Facebook Group

I’m thinking I need to track down all the LMSC Facebook groups and put them together in one place. Feel free to email me links (rob@robaquatics.com) or leave them in the comments, I’ll try and find what I can by myself over the weekend.

  • If you play with Facebook and you haven’t seen it yet, an official USMS Facebook group is out there now.

There is also a USMS Network that you can attach yourself to. This was harder to do than I expected with the new Facebook layout they launched a few days back so I figured I would make a quick guide for those of you that want to do it. Here’s what you need to do to make that happen…

Go to www.usms.org/admin/aliasrequest.php to request a usms.org email address. So now to my list of about 100 different email addresses I can add robd@usms.org

Wait for usms to approve your new email

When you have your new email address go into Facebook and click on settings at the top of your screen.

    Then hit the networks tab

Next type U.S. Masters Swimming (exactly like that otherwise you won’t find it) into the Network Name box. Once you’ve selected the network you will be prompted to enter your usms.org email address. Click Join Network.

Finally you’ll get a confirmation email from Facebook and once you click the confirmation link that they send you you’re done! Oh and there is one fun unintended side effect… doing this will make it look like you work for USMS. I’m going to have to come up with a good title for myself… I’m thinking Director of Central Californian Swim Blogging Operations.
