At the SPMA Regional/USMS SW Zone LCM Championships a lot of records were broken, but one swimmer in particular had an exceptionally good meet. Michael Mann broke records in the 200/400/800 free and the 200/400 IM for the 55-59 age group at the pool in Thousand Oaks. Check out his interview with Swimming World Magazine

This is what I love about the guys at Swimming World Magazine, with all the excitement surrounding FINA World Championships in Rome they still take the time to recognize the achievements of masters swimmers. Very cool.

I had some technical difficulties between the magic of Windows Vista and bad hotel wi-fi internet connections over the weekend, but now that I’m home I managed to get my videos put together and uploaded. As usual, I am the fair sized bald guy in the Tracer Light. I’m in lane 3 for both races.

First up is my 100m Free from Saturday that was filmed for me by Kathleen from Rose Bowl. If you convert it to SCY this was a best time for me by 2 seconds. I swam a 1:05.60

The other race I got on video was the 100m fly that Julie from CSAM (who won all 7 of her individual events btw!!!) took for me. I swam a 1:09.33 which is a best time within the same second I’ve been swimming all season.

So there you have it. Feel free to pick me apart technically in the comments.

I just wanted to divert your attention towards some excellent coverage of the 2009 SPMA Regional/USMS SW Zone LCM Championship meet hosted by Conejo Simi Masters this past weekend. Numerous World and National records were broken in both individual and relay events.

What can I say… this meet had such a great vibe! It was so fun and positive and FAST! I’m really glad I got to spend the weekend down there and so many people from my team were there to swim with me. I think Conejo Simi Masters was something like 50 people deep, maybe a little more with relay swimmers, and everyone did great. We had a few people like me that swim meets all the time, but a lot of them were swimming their first masters meets and loving it. You could see so much progression in some people across the 3 days of racing. I hope a lot of them get the bug and start coming to more meets.

As far as my races, they all went pretty well. I dropped .2 tenths of a second on my 50 free which puts me at a 29.28… borderline statistically irrelevant in my age group, but still a strong time for me.

My main event of the day was the 100 fly. (I have some video of the race courtesy of Julie, but I’m having some video publishing issues so that might hit the blog a little later. In the meantime I grabbed a few screen caps of the race.) I think I had a really good start and breakout but my energy level wasn’t 100%. I went out a little slow for me (33ish or so I’m told), but I finished better than usual. I touched at 1:09.33 which is about a .4 second drop. I’m happy to have a new best time, but I wish I would have been able to crack into the 1:08′s. I swam a 1:09 something everytime I swam the 100 fly this season.

My last individual event was the 200 free. This has never been a good event for me, but it fit my schedule so I decided to go for it. I’m not impressed with my time, but it did score points for the team. I swam a 2:33.23 which is 6 seconds faster than I did it in the relay the day before, but it’s still not great.

The end of the meet finished with RELAY PANDEMONIUM!!! 4 relay events all on top of each other in rapid succession with 50 people being shuffled from event to event. It was totally nuts but it worked out. A lot of heats had 3 to 4 CSAM teams in them, I commend Coach Nancy on her strategic relay building prowess! I swam the breaststroke leg on the men’s 200m medley relay, led off the men’s 200m free relay, swam Fly on the mixed 200m medley relay, and then lead off the mixed 200m freestyle relay. I’ve never swam like this before… race to one end of the pool, get out, walk back to the blocks to figure out which relay you’re on next, repeat. I have no idea what kind of times I swam, I have a feeling some of them were questionable… but it was a good time.

When all the dust settled the team rankings came out: 1. SCAQ, 2. Ojai 3. Conejo Simi. It was nice to see SCAQ bring out so many swimmers. They’re such a big club but a lot of the local meets only bring out 5-15 of their swimmers, this weekend they were out in full force. Congrats guys! Ojai also brought tons of swimmers and did a great job in the pool. I’m pretty happy with our 3rd place and I hope next year we can all duke it out again but with even more swimmers!

100 breaststroke action

Today was day 2 of the Zone meet in Thousand Oaks and my first day of racing. There were a ton of people at the pool today, all told it sounds like we were near 400 entries! And lots of first time masters meet swimmers which I think is super awesome. I hope to start seeing a lot of these new faces at more of the in season meets later this year. The meet ran slower than the timeline, but it was smoothly run and it seemed like everyone was having fun and swimming fast.

I started out with the 50m fly. I’ve been chasing a sub 30 second 50 all season and I keep just missing it. I was very determined to finally catch this time before we shift back to short course. I was in heat 10 of 12 in the outside lane. I got a good start and felt really good in the water. I finally managed to get my 29.9 which was my goal time exactly. I’m stoked with this time!

My next event was right after the 50 fly, the 4 x 100m free relay. I’m always excited to swim relays so I was definitly ready for this. I wasn’t excited about leading off the relay though since I just got out of the pool from my first event. Me and Julie switched places and I picked up the anchor spot instead. My relay was me, Julie who swims a lot of meets as well, a younger fast girl that was swimming her first masters meet and a guy in the same spot that I was in last year who just found his way back to competitive swimming. I haven’t swam the 100 free in long course before so I didn’t know what was really going to happen here. Last time I swam a 100 in SCY I went a 58 so I was expecting a 1:08 and was hoping for a 1:07. Much to my surprise I laid down a 1:05! I didn’t even believe it when everyone told me. That translates into like a 56 in SCY so this was a very big welcome surprise. I guess my work in Santa Maria with the masters group there is starting to pay off! I really think in this race I had one of the best starts I’ve ever had. I launched of the blocks and kicked like a madman. I had someone trying to overtake me in the next lane next through the whole 100 but I managed to hold him off. Our relay took 2nd place in the 100-119 age group, and seeing as I heard the team that beat us set a major record of some sort I cool with second on this one :)

My next event was the 100 freestyle… again. I really wanted to duplicate my time from earlier in the day in an official time kind of manner. I swam another 1:05 and I’m pleased with the effort. Kathleen from Rosebowl was nice enough to take some video of this race for me. I tried to upload it to YouTube and after like 2 hours of the progress bar moving incredibly slowly it ended in an error… boo. Anyways, I’ll get it posted when I get home.

I was supposed to swim the 200 IM but I wussed out. I was picked for the 100 fly leg in one of our medley relays and I just can’t do a 100 fly right after a 200 IM.

The 400m medley relay was fun. We had two super fast younger swimmers and then me and Julie again. I was honestly a little apprehensive about the swim because I was getting pretty tired from such a long day in the sun, but I felt smooth in the water. I tried to take it out easy so that I wouldn’t totally gas out on the finish. I managed to swim a 1:09 which has been my default time all season. I really want to get under that 1:09 tomorrow when I swim it as an individual event.

We wrapped the day up with an 800m freestyle relay… charming huh? It was a “take one for the team” kind of a race. We needed the points and there were an overwhelming number of CSA caps out there in this race. We were given the general guidance that it was cool to not go crazy trying to pop off a super fast time just don’t get DQ’d! I cruised to a 2:39 which isn’t great, but it was a good chance for me to feel out the distance since I’ve never done it in long course. We ended up winning first in the 120-159 age group which was pretty cool. Tomorrow I’m hoping to go substantially faster in the 200.

All told this has been an excellent meet. I’m swimming fast, my friends are swimming fast, and it seems like pretty much everybody is here. I’m stoked that things are going so well and I hope to keep it going tomorrow. I’ve been having a hard time with long course season but I seem to finally be making some breakthroughs.

Day 1, 1500m action

I spent a couple hours hanging out at day one of the SPMA Regional/SW Zone meet. It was all the 1500m free today. The 1500m is not for me, but I did want to get down there, set my tent up, swim a few yards, and see some of my friends do some fast swimming.

I talked to my coach and figured out which relays I’m going to be on tomorrow… I’m going to be busy! I’m swimming the 50 fly, 400 free relay, 100 free, 200 IM, 400 medley relay (100 fly), and the 800 freestyle relay… I’m not completely sure I can do all that, but I’m going to try!

I took a few pictures of the action while I was on deck…

Go!

Results will be posted here

And just a quick note for those of you that will be out there tomorrow… sunscreen and liquids, it’s probably going to be hot!

I’ve got 6 individual events that I am swimming this weekend at the USMS Southwestern Zone LCM Championships. I’m not looking for any monster drops, just incremental improvements.

50 Free
Current Time: 29.48
Goal Time: 28.6

100 Free
Current Time: 1:08.16(converted from 58.82 in SCY)
Goal Time: 1:07.9

200 Free
Current Time: 2:29.28(converted from 2:09.13 in SCY)
Goal Time: 2:25

50 Fly
Current Time: 30.36
Goal Time: 29.9

100 Fly
Current Time: 1:09.76
Goal Time: 1:08.9

200 IM
Current Time: 2:49.29
Goal Time: 2:47

The ones I really want to do well in are the 50 free, 50 fly, and the 100 fly. I basically just want to catch up to Tony from the SCAQ Blog in that 50 free hence the goal time suspiciously similar to his seed time. In the 50 fly I really want to break 30, I’ve been close but I haven’t quite made it just yet. The 100 fly in LCM is still very difficult for me since I focus so much on the wall in short course races. I’ve swam 1:09 a couple of times in this race and I’m just looking to drop into the 1:08′s.

The other 3 races I want to do well in, but my version of “good” is basically a guess for 2 of them because I’ve never swam the 100 and 200 free in long course meters. The 200 IM is thrown in there just because I’m a bad decision maker and I think I can do better than I did at Santa Barbara earlier this month.

Beyond swimming fast, my other goal is to have fun! I’m spending the whole weekend in Thousand Oaks and lots of my swim friends will be in attendance. Plus I should be swimming on a few relays which I always think is super awesome! I’ll be around the pool a little bit on Friday, but I won’t be racing until Saturday. If you see me wandering around say hi! Now I just need to work on shaving my head and getting packed…

I just got some more info this morning for the meet this weekend in Thousand Oaks. Over 350 swimmers are entered for the meet and by the looks of the psych sheets there are going to be some fast folks out at the pool!

For those of you going to the Zone meet hosted by Conejo Simi Masters this weekend, here is the estimated timeline:

www.spma.net/meetforms/2009/LCMtimeline.pdf

Remember this is just an estimate! I heard a few people complaining at the SCM Regional meet in Long Beach last December about missing events because the meet when too fast. Make sure you get to the pool with plenty of time before you need to race!

I just got an e-mail letting me know that the meet is up around 325 entrants at the moment which is over 100 more swimmers than we had last year!

Late entries for the 2009 Southwestern Zone LCM Champs are due Saturday the 18th by 8PM!!! If your entry isn’t in yet you need to get a move on! The total cost for late entries is $50. All the official meet info is here
