Just a little heads up for you open water fans… there’s a big event going on in New York City this month with attendees and speakers from all over the world. I can’t make it out there personally but it sounds pretty cool to me. I talked to the event organizer, Steven Munatones, about it and it sounds really interesting. He has people like Lewis Pugh, Martin Strel the big river man, Penny Dean, the Ventura Deep Six team, Shelly Taylor Smith, and other open water all stars there speaking.
Here’s some info straight from the event organizers:
A global gathering of open water swimming athletes, including world champions, celebrated soloists, world-record holders and Olympians, coaches, administrators, officials, physicians, researchers, scientists, documentary directors, writers and enthusiasts.
Attendees can take part in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame induction ceremonies at the United Nations, attend the World Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year, World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year and World Open Water Swimming Women of the Year award ceremonies and observe the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim as well as be inspired by many of the world’s greatest aquatic adventurers.
10% of fees will go to Swim Free™ (swimfree.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to health improvement of children and adults through swimming. Swim Free’s mission is to get everybody in the water, safely and comfortably, and is expanding to support learn to swim programs throughout the tri state area, and ultimately nationwide.
Schedule:
  • June 17th – Inspirational Talks and Certification Program
  • June 18th – Technical Sessions and the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim
  • June 19th – Awards Brunch at the United Nations
