So I may have kinda sorta accidentally bought a surfboard today :) Honestly it was a little premeditated, I just didn’t realize that I was going to do it today… it just kinda happened. I wandered down to the Pismo Beach Surf Shop which is a couple blocks up from the water and looked through their used boards. One popped out at me, mild negotiations ensued and all of a sudden I owned a surfboard. Whoops!

Oddly I wasn’t really looking for a board to specifically surf, my interest is more in something agile to paddle along side a swimmer for shorter distances where a kayak would be overkill. It’s yet to be determined if this is a good board for that, but it seems to be right. It’s about 8 feet and really thick for a surfboard.

I took it out for its maiden voyage after work and wow, today was not the day for that! The wind down in Grover Beach was blowing like crazy and the waves were going all kinds of different directions. I figured I’d just go for it anyways and see what the board felt like to paddle.

It’s fair to say I’m not a natural :) I had a hard time balancing on the board but every once and a while I got it just right. I just need to spend more time on it. I also need to lay more wax down on it. I put a coat on it before leaving the house and it obviously wasn’t enough because I was still slipping around. If the wind dies down maybe I’ll take it back out tomorrow but to Avila where it’s a little calmer most of the time.

I did catch a wave while I was out though! I didn’t actually stand up… but I could feel how well the board just slides into a wave and glides across it… now I just need to find the balance to do something about it!

Nice. I think I’d like to learn to surf at some point. Well, certainly some time this summer you will be standing up on it and riding a wave. Can’t wait to hear about it. Me, I’d probably go take a lesson or two.

I figure I’ve been in California since the mid 90′s, it’s about time I learn… the stereotype demands it of me! I should probably take lessons… and have bought a 2 foot longer board… but we’ll see how it goes :)
