Seeing as the open water season is done for most reasonable people by this time of year it’s become incumbent upon me to make my own fun, and as is my nature I like to over do things a little bit. Normally when someone goes Polar Bearing on New Years Day it’s a quick jog into the water and a much faster sprint back out, well I’ve decided to stretch my Polar Bear swim out a little bit… I’m going for a 10k marathon swim from Avila Beach to the Pismo Beach Pier! I’m expecting about 3 hours in 53-55 degree water, I think that will be sufficient for my 2011 Polar Bearing experience :)

This past year I’ve gotten the chance to swim all over the country including all 5 United States Masters Swimming Open Water National Championships, a lap around Alcatraz in San Francisco, a 12.6 mile swim from Manhattan Beach to Santa Monica, a 5k swim in downtown Chicago, a 4.4 mile crossing of the Chesapeake Bay, and a cold water 5k in Coney Island in November! I’m really excited to take all that experience and channel it into a big swim here at home.

I’ve been wanting to do this Avila to Pismo Pier to Pier swim for years! It’s not really so easy as just hopping in the ocean and going. For starters you need to be mentally and physically ready for cold water, chop, currents, the potential for ill tempered sea life and lots of swimming. Then you need a good team of helpers to keep you safe and on track. I’ll have my friend and ocean training partner Niel leading the way in a kayak and helping me out with my feedings during the swim. In the rear I’ll have a Zodiac Boat from the Seaweed Express there on shark watch and as a safety back up. If I go hypothermic or need to exit the water in a hurry they’re my way out!

Pismo Polar Bear Route, 10 kilometers of frosty goodness!

As an added bonus we’re going to take this swim and turn it into some good in my local community. We’re going to raise some money for the SLO Food Bank to feed hungry folks here in San Luis Obispo County. They manage to turn every dollar donated into about 10 pounds of food. To put that in perspective, I’m a fair sized gentleman and for just $22 you can donate my entire weight in food!
To get things rolling my company, Systems & Marketing Solutions, is matching up to $500 in donations so your $22 could all of a sudden turn into $44… not bad right?
I’m going to pay my own way on this one so everything donated is going to the SLO Food Bank! To make a donation click on the PayPal button below, the donate ad in the top right hand corner of the site, or you can send a check made out to “Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County” to Rob Dumouchel, 191 S. Oak Park Blvd, Suite 4, Grover Beach, CA.

Check out my fancy workout conveyance device... it doubles as a water bottle :)

I had a pretty hard time getting out of the house today. I felt magnetically attached to my couch… creating enough forward momentum to break free of it’s gravitational pull took some doing. I eventually wrote a workout and packed my swim bag and was out the door around 7:30 and in the pool about 5 to 8.

I grabbed an empty lane along the edge of the pool and got to work. After my warm up and kick set I put on my SwiMP3 to get me through a big 2000m set. That thing is really helpful on nights where I’m out there solo trying to get through a lot of distance.

Tomorrow I think I’m going to the ocean to swim, but I’m not sure if anyone else is going to join me. Niel can’t go so I’ll have to bug a few other people to see if they’re interested. The pool I swim at in Santa Maria is closed all week so I have to come up with an alternative plan for my lunchtime swim… we’ll see where I end up.

This weekend has been pretty amazing in the weather department here at my place… condolences to my midwestern friends and family covered in snow at the moment. I think one of my favorite parts of living on the Central Coast is that it has a complete disregard for seasons and can serve up a random piece of summer at any time. We were pushing like 80 degrees at the beach and the skies were perfectly clear. The water was a chilly 55, but super smooth with no surf to speak of at all.

I met up with Niel and Sylvia on the beach and then followed Niel out onto the pier to get the water temp and see what was going on out in the ocean. There wasn’t much sea life moving about, a few birds off towards the Poly pier and that was about it. While we were getting ready on the beach to go swim it was hot enough that I was getting a little sweaty even! Although that’s nice for after a swim it does kind of give your body false hope on the way into the ocean. My acclimatization process was not rapid today!

Once I finally convinced myself to start swimming I did my best to hustle and catch up with Niel, he’d been floating at the buoy line for a little while at this point. When I got there we negotiated out the first part of our swim, down to Fossil Point. It was a good day for it since the water was so flat, no real chance of a wave tossing you at a rock or anything. We made one stop at the end of the buoy line to regroup briefly and then made our way to the point.

The view down there was pretty epic and we hung out for a little while figuring out where to go next. Niel suggested the tip of the pier and I was game for that. This stretch was a pretty long unbroken chunk of swimming, maybe 7-800m, which gave me a chance to focus on my stroke. I tried to pay attention to where my left arm was going and where I was keeping my head.

At the end of the pier we had a whole bunch of people staring out at us, they weren’t totally sure what to think of two random dudes that far out in the water who had come from points unknown. One came and talked to us later by the showers to let us know she was super impressed with our crazy person-ness :). While we were at the pier we decided to keep going for a while and swim to the creek buoy then follow the buoy line back to the pier.

The water temps on the north side of the pier were really patchy. You get the occasional “hot” patch which was pretty glamorous but then you’d pay it back with a really really cold patch. I have no idea why just this side of the pier would be so variable in temperature, but those warmer patches were definitely welcome.

Since the water was so flat today we swam back under the pier to get to the same spot that we started from. I took the opportunity to play marine biologist on the way through… I had seen some big starfish from up on the pier earlier and wanted to see them a little more close up. I found a nice big orange one and snapped a few pics. Pretty cool huh?

After our swim I went back to my neighborhood for some lunch and then trekked up to Go For It Sports in Atascadero to stock up on some goggles. They carry my favorite Blueseventy Element goggles and I wanted some fresh pairs for upcoming swims. I’m working out the final details on a 10k from Avila Beach to Pismo Beach for the 1st… more on that should be coming this week!

On my way home I had to drive past the 50m pool in SLO so I figured why not stop in for a little bit right? I had my bag in the truck still so all my gear was with me. I put on my cold, wet and salty swimsuit and decided to swim about two grand to round out my day.

Nothing too exciting, but a good cap to the day! I’ll probably be back up there tomorrow for some more long course action.

I trekked up highway 1 this morning to Morro Bay to go check out some Stand Up Paddleboards this morning. Central Coast Standup was hosting a demo day at Coleman Beach down by Morro Rock where you could try out a whole bunch of boards for free there in the bay. Pretty cool right? Plus it didn’t hurt that despite being December the sun was out, there was no fog and it’s pushing 80 degrees here on the coast right now!

I came out a little early because my knowledge of Morro Bay geography leaves a little to be desired. My first attempt was in the right park but the wrong side of the road. I found where all the regular surfers were hanging out. I figured I was either in the wrong spot of this dude was fantastically ambitious in his demonstration plans! Turns out I was just lost. Eventually I figured out that they were testing boards across the street in more protected waters… phew :) On my walk down to the little piece of beach that they were launching boards from I saw some SWIMMERS! Ahh! Total surprise… I yelled down and said hi from the rocks and talked to them back at the beach a little later when they finished their workout. I always get excited when I find people swimming locally, there’s not too many of us especially in December!

Once I got down to the beach I met Matt from Central Coast Standup and he gave me the run down on what he had on the beach that morning. There were a whole bunch of boards ready to go in all kinds of shapes and sizes. He had everything from a plastic whitewater board to racing boards. I was welcome to hop on anything I wanted. I started with something in the middle but managed to try one of just about everything but the smallest boards which wouldn’t really be size appropriate for me.

What a difference a nice board makes though! I’ve only ridden rentals in Newport and Avila, the boards I’ve rented have all been sturdy and user friendly but heavy, slow, and hard to turn. Most of the boards I tried today felt really good on top of the water, they floated in a different kind of way. Most were a little less stable than what I’ve ridden before, but since I’ve been out 5 or 6 times at this point that was ok. I’ve found my balance for the most part on SUPs and I didn’t take a tumble at all today which is pretty good for me and my general lack of balance!

Most of the boards on the beach were from a company called Angulo Designs and they were the ones behind my favorite ride of the day, the Shaka. It’s like 14 feet long (for reference, my truck is only 3 feet longer than that!) but thin and reasonably maneuverable. It traveled really nice and I felt good on it. I talked to one of the guys from Angulo that was there on the beach and he explained how it’s built to go fast but be versatile. So it’s not an all out race board, but still has a lot of speed. It’s supposed to be good at dealing with chop and motion in the water. I think this would be an ideal board for someone like me with an interest in SUP for general exploring and fitness. I’m not ready to buy a board just yet, but when I get around to it this one’s pretty high up on my list.

I spent probably 2 hours bouncing from one board to the next having a great time. The whole adventure out to Morro Bay was very educational. I’m starting to formulate a much solider opinion of what I would want in a board for my own use. Now I just need to get a rack on my truck to carry one and save up some bucks to actually pay for it all!

I was in for just a quick swim tonight. I got in to SLO around 6:30 for an LCM swim. They move the bulkhead at about 6:30 on Fridays so I had a little while to chill out. I opted for a trip to the hot tub while they worked on that. I like the hot tub :)

Anyways about 15/20 minutes later I had to transition to the real pool. My buddy that was a maybe to swim with me had to bail, but his excuse was excellent so that’s ok. I had a lane to myself and wasn’t looking to go too far tonight. I just wish I would have had the foresight to charge my SwiMP3 during the day so I would have had some music for the swim. It’s plugged in right now so my next solo swim won’t be so silent!

This was pretty much just a cruise through it sort of swim save a couple fast 100′s. I wanted to focus a little on how I was swimming. Since I swim without a coach on deck most of the time it’s on me to make sure my stroke is roughly where it should be.

Not sure that I’ll be in a pool tomorrow, but I will be on the water. I’ll be up the road a little ways in Morro Bay for some Standup Paddleboarding in the morning, it should be fun! If the waves are big like they were on Thursday I might even go bodysurfing at some point too.

floating at the top of a wave about to break!

For lunch today I met Niel down at Avila Beach for a swim. When I drove up to the beach I could see and hear big waves pounding the beach, woah! Some of them were breaking just under the top of the pier and spraying up the sides, totally nuts for this beach! Based on the size of the waves I almost think I should have brought my duck feet and skunked the swim in favor of some body surfing! The weather was mainly sunny with a weird roaming fog bank floating about, and Niel measured the water at  about 55.

incoming!

After getting ourselves put together to swim we walked down to the water with a plan basically consisting of “I’ll meet you on the other side of those waves.” To be fair, getting out took some doing. The sets were pretty long with big waves close together. Niel said he almost bailed out after having about 3 waves in a row stuff his progress. We met up out at the buoy line as planned, both huffing and puffing a little bit from the effort required to get there, and devised a plan. We decided on the big triangle (down the buoy line, over the top of the pier and around the other side of the buoy line) to avoid swimming under the pier. Some major swells were rolling through that pretty much guaranteed an unpleasant meeting with a piling if we would have gone for it.

our roaming fog bank on the move again

The swim down the south side of the buoy line was tough! The wind was blowing back at the pier and the water had a lot of movement in it. Some pretty major swells were in motion and there was a fair amount of chop to work through. We regrouped at the last buoy and you could see these monster rollers coming our way, lifting us up like 6 feet, and then going on their merry way towards the beach.

watching the waves break on shore while regrouping

Our next target was the end of the pier which had randomly become hidden in fog. It was sunny and clear pretty much everywhere else though… odd. Since we’ve done this leg about a million times at this point not being able to see the pier wasn’t much of a deterrent. We swam on out to the top of the pier and by the time we got there the fog was gone and instead was obscuring our view of the creek buoy which was our next stop!

at the pier staring down into the fog looking for our next stop

Again, this was a part of the bay we both know really well so we aimed for about where we thought it was and used some of the other buoys in the middle that the boats use for parking as reference.

halfway to the creek buoy

Niel and I at the Creek Buoy looking towards our next stop at the pier

By the time we hit our target buoy the fog had yet again moved on. At this point it was en route to the Port and from there points unknown. Our last leg towards the pier was all smiles and sunshine. We stopped just short of the last buoy in an effort to not get too close to the pier for our swim back in through what was still pretty big surf. Niel swam in ahead of me and I took my time getting in to take a few pictures and see if I could catch a piece of one of these waves. That wasn’t to be however, without fins I just couldn’t get a hold of these big guys.

Niel with some sea birds cruising by in the background

Actually getting out of the water wasn’t so easy. The tide was in a good ways and the water was deeper than usual with a really uneven bottom. If you actually managed to put a foot down there was a bit of an undertow going back out to sea… not helpful. You had to do a little bit of an awkward swim/hop thing through the shallower water until you could break free onto the actual beach.

Post swim I rinsed off real quick and deck changed then ran back to work! But while I was in the office I decided to double up today and swim some more at the pool in the evening.

50m all to myself

I hit the pool at Kennedy in SLO around 7:30 to find it set up for SCM, a little unexpected but whatever. I started my warm up and my buddy James hopped in next to me, also unexpected but welcome… we haven’t swam together in a pretty long time! He hung with me through my SCM warm up and we caught up on life in general during the kick set. After that he had to help move the bulkhead back to LCM so the pool was essentially out of commission for about 15 minutes. I retired to the hot tub and talked with another swimmer who I hadn’t met in person yet but I have a lot of mutual friends with while the pool was in the midst of it’s long course metamorphosis.

Once we were back to 50m everyone on the deck and in the hot tub split leaving me with a full 50m pool all to myself! Excellent! It didn’t last the whole rest of the workout, but I probably got in 1500m before anyone else hopped in. I knocked out my main set and a short cool down and then split town. I figure 3200m on top of my rough water mile from lunch add up to a pretty decent day in the water!

I’m thinking I’ll be back in the pool in SLO tomorrow night as well and then I’m planning on hitting up an SUP Demo Day with Central Coast Stand Up Paddling in Morro Bay. If you’re in the neighborhood and want to check out some SUP’s this looks like a pretty rad excursion!

It was a nice sunny day for a swim in Santa Maria today. Mike was fresh back from coaching at SCY Nationals in Ohio (one of his kids is the 18 and under 200 fly national champ!) and hadn’t swam since before Thanksgiving so today’s workout was pretty laid back. We hung out on deck a little longer than what was really necessary to figure out what we’d swim today… eventually Dani joined us and we finally got things under way.

Dani is rocking a custom camo Rob Aquatics suit! Rad!

I was definitely feeling my late night swim from yesterday, but it was all muscle soreness no grindy joints. I think I’ve finally got that all the way out of my system. This Thursday is pretty much my last shot to swim in this pool until after Christmas I think. They’ve got a sign up letting us know it’s closing next Monday until the 22nd, but then it’s closed through the holiday too. Lame. I’m going to have to convince Niel that he needs to do some bonus ocean swimming in the next couple weeks for lunch :)

boo... all kinds of down time coming up at my Santa Maria pool

since I swam in the dark & some fog tonight, here's a totally unrelated picture from lunch in Pismo today :)

I made my first trip in a long time to the 50m pool at the Kennedy Club Fitness up in San Luis Obispo. Once my open water season got underway this year this pool pretty much fell off my schedule. I think we’re going to be making up for a lot of lost time the next couple months! I wrote up a 5000m workout after work and promptly proceeded to wonder if I’d actually do all that by myself. It’s been a while since I’ve done much swimming solo and a really long time since I’ve gone that far in a pool as opposed to a large wall-less body of water of some sort.

I got the the pool a little before 7pm and things were pretty sparse. It was dark, there was some major fog action going on and each lane had one person in it. I spent some time on deck trying to figure out the lay of the land and pick somebody to split with. I ended up going with the far lane, my guy only lasted 50 more meters after I got in so that was helpful. The other 4950m I had the entire lane to myself, score!

I started with a fairly long warm up and then transitioned into my long course ladder of doom! For whatever reason I like to do ladders in 50m pools, maybe because I can actually count over 200m without forgetting where I am in a long course pool :) When I started the ladder I threw on my Finis SwiMP3 to help get me through it. I was accompanied by some mid 80′s Metallica for those 2500m which was helpful at keeping me in the water by myself that long. Keeping consistent with my open water swimming I did take a little feed after the 500. At this point my body expects some calories if I swim past a certain time/distance. I had a gel packet in my mesh bag that did the job and then I got back to work.

After my ladder and a little pile of 100′s I finished up with a handful of fast 50′s (3 free and 1 fly) and worked pretty hard on them. No idea how fast I was going though because the fog was too thick to see any of the pace clocks.

I’m thinking I need to add like 3 trips to this pool a week to help me build up to bigger things this next year. Right now I’m thinking Monday, Thursday, Friday nights to go with my Tuesday/Thursday lunch swims and the Sunday ocean swim. We’ll see how well I really stick to that, but I’m cautiously optimistic :) Tomorrow I’ll be in the water in Santa Maria for lunch.

I spent all weekend in Long Beach for the SPMA SCM Championship meet at the Belmont Pool. This was my third trip to this meet and I always have fun because pretty much everybody ever is there. I spent the whole time talking, talking talking… minus about 3 minutes of racing :) My actual swimming wasn’t so hot this weekend but I don’t really care, spending time with the people in attendance more than made up for it!

2 of my favorite open water friends, Beth and Lynn, at a POOL! Weird :)

On Saturday I got in around 10am after wrapping up my morning’s open water adventure. I had a lot of time to kill before I was going to race so I pretty much just did rounds of the pool deck looking for friends I haven’t seen in a while and finding a few folks I hadn’t actually met in person yet but had been wanting to. This was a highly successful endeavor. I was especially excited to finally meet open water all star Forrest Nelson in person, I still think it’s kind of funny that it happened at a pool swim meet though… what are the odds right?

When I finally got to my event, the 100m breast, I was pretty anxious to swim. I had on my fancy outdated TYR tech jammer that I bought at this meet the first year I came to it in 2008. It was going out of style at the time, but now that bodysuits are off the menu it’s a pretty hot commodity all of a sudden. I will say I felt faster than I do in the suits I usually wear, but nothing like wearing a real deal techsuit that goes to the shoulders. Anyways… I was hoping to just go faster than I did at the Turkey Shoot where I was like 10ish seconds slower than my seed time! I felt really good off the start. I don’t know if was as good of a start as I perceived it, but it felt pretty fantastic to me. The first 50m of the race went pretty well but I started fading pretty hard at the turn. I hadn’t really eaten anything yet that day and it was like 2:30 and I started my day with a 5k so I think I was just out of gas. Totally my fault, but I’m really bad about eating at swim meets. I can get away with it at the short 1 day meets, but a big deal all day meet like Belmont… not so much. I did however drop about 5 seconds from my time at the Turkey Shoot meet which made me happy. Still way slower than I think I should be, but I’ll take it.

don't call it a comeback...

After the 100m breast I decided to call it a day. I only had the 50m free and it was going to be hours until it went down. I took the opportunity to go back to the hotel and then go on foot into town in search of a late lunch. Later on I caught up with a few friends that had been at the meet all day and we got dinner and a couple drinks.

For Sunday I came in around the same time but actually had some events on the front end of the day. I’ve been to this meet enough times now to know that I don’t want to sign up for events later in the schedule because I’ll be there all day. It’s not that I don’t want to hang out at the pool, but if it takes me until 5 or 6 to leave Long Beach I won’t finish driving home until like 10 at night which is no fun. On the way to the pool from the parking lot I finally got to meet Dawn from Splish (the place that makes the Rob Aquatics Suits). She went on to set a world record in the 800m free later in the morning!

My first race of the day was the 100m fly. Considering my recent not so fastness I set my goal time at faster than my worst time from last year. Aim high right? My best time in the event is a 1:05 (swam in this pool in 2009), and I was gunning for a 1:10… haha… oh man I need to do some more sprints in workout… so again I felt pretty good off the start but I just couldn’t find that sprint gear. I probably could have gone 300m at that pace but I couldn’t figure out a way to go any faster for just 100. Oh well, I had fun and I did hit my 1:10 goal! Alright!

My next and last event of the day was right after, the 50m breaststroke which turned out to be pretty much the most ridiculous race of my adult life. I stepped up on the blocks for the start and I was reasonably focused. I launched off the blocks into my best feeling dive in a long time… I hit the water and started dolphin kicking like a champ… which is thoroughly illegal. I had some kind of butterfly flashback when I hit the water or something and started the complete wrong event. I figured this out after like 10m… I’ve never ever done that before, even as a kid. I kind of shook my head underwater and laughed at myself then breaststroked the rest of the way through my race. I was totally expecting to be greeted by an official to get DQed back at the blocks but no one was there for me. I couldn’t really just let it stand like that so I went over to the officials and turned myself in as a huge accidental cheater. They appreciated the honesty but couldn’t really DQ me for something that they couldn’t see. I had been in lane 4 and the guys to the left of me pretty much blocked their view of whatever I may have been doing.

And with that I figured that it was a pretty good thing that I was done for the day! I spent another hour or so on the pool deck talking to friends and avoiding the 4 hour drive home. My friend Natalie proposed a Bay swim before I split town but after checking the water quality online we decided that wasn’t such a hot idea. It had been raining on and off and the bay was a little yucky at this point.

Me and Natalie on deck... neither of us is that out of focus in real life

Now that the swim year is pretty much officially done and I don’t have any meets in the area until like February I can really focus on what’s going to happen in 2011. I have lots of ideas, but I need to do lots of work to get ready for them and find lots of money to make it all happen… it’s going to be a busy winter!

So I’m in Long Beach this weekend for the SPMA SCM Championship meet and well I’m really not in meet mode. My sprinting has been non-existent and that “speedy” gear is nowhere to be found, so…. I decided to make the most of spending the weekend in Long Beach by setting up a swim date with Beth from ikayak4u.com to take a cruise around Naples Island!

yay Beth!

I met her down on the beach at 7 and we caught up a little bit while I got myself ready to swim. I was in ankle deep water and it was definitely colder than I would have anticipated for this far south. When I was ready to get going I started to walk into the water and at about my waist I decided that this wasn’t going to work at all, it would take me forever to get all the way wet. Instead I made my way over to the dock right there and threw myself off it… way faster!

From here the plan was simple, swim around the island. Like I usually do I kept Beth on my right and she guided me across the water to the island and then around. We had all kinds of rowers to dodge today, they were everywhere and all different types. Beth was on high alert yelling or whistling at anyone that got to close to let them know there was a swimmer in the water. During that first 30 minutes I wasn’t feeling too hot, I hadn’t quite found my stride. After a quick feed I started feeling better and could kind of lose myself in the swim.

getting passed by one of many boats

On the backside of the island we took our feed break a little early because there were some rowers coming that were looking a little squirrelly and we didn’t really trust too much. It was funny to see the looks from the rowers as they passed… wait a minute, someone’s IN the water :)

Once they were going we kept chugging along and had more  boats pass us. In passing one dude yelled to Beth “you gotta get that guy a wetsuit for Christmas!” As much as I would appreciate the gift I’m not sure it would get used so much :) Pretty soon after that we swam under the last bridge on our route and it became very apparent to me that the tide was very high. The flag on the back of Beth’s kayak was hitting the bridge above! Yikes!

another foot of water and there might have been some portage action going on!

Back at the beach were we started I got all my stuff back off the kayak and finally found out the real water temp… 56… not crazy cold, but cold enough! My towel was in my truck so I did a brisk walk across the street to go get it and dry off. I think I was quite the site to see crossing the street dripping wet in a brown and green zebra Rob Aquatics suit in December! I’m pretty sure I got a bit of a look from the guy waiting for me to get across at the stop sign!
