pushing off into the main set

Honestly I was kind of hoping for a chill, half assed kind of day… I’ve been charging pretty hard recently and my body is hurting. Unfortunately I was the only one on that plan today! We started pretty mellow but the main set was enough to capture my full attention for 1600 yards! Well I did have a few lapses in concentration but I blame that on backstroke. While swimming on my back I started contemplating the shapes of clouds and not really paying attention to what I was doing. I saw a triceratops and the Notre Dame Leprechaun up there… and then I smacked my forearm into the wall… whoops. No more cloud gazing for me.

200 mix
400 reverse IM kick/swim by 25

800 pull (100 back, 200 free, 50 breast, 200 free, 50 back, 200 free) – 900 was prescribed but I skipped some

16 x 100 alt free & free IM @ 1:30

3000 yards total

3 of us did the main set on what was deemed the “motivatory” interval, but there was around 6 or 7 of us in the water doing the workout today. Even though it turned out harder than I had hoped I’m happy I did it. A good hard swim was what I needed today. Tonight however I need an ice pack and an adult beverage so I’m going to go work on that. Tomorrow I should be underwater in Avila Beach for some open water excitement.

happy to be wet

The new SPMA Newsletter was just recently posted to the web and has an article about me in it! If you didn’t know, I became the Member-at-Large on the Executive Committee for SPMA this year so this was kind of a “get to know a member” sort of a piece. It was written by my friend Helene and I think she did an outstanding job! It’s kind of weird being on this side of an interview… normally I’m the guy with all the questions!

Anyways you can read the entire pdf of newsletter here, the part about me is on the last page. If you live in the SPMA region you’ll get a copy with your USMS Swimmer magazine. I’ve republished the article below with permission from our outstanding newsletter editor Julie.
Rob Dumouchel: Member At Large! By Helene Hirsch

Rob is going on a nationwide tour to swim in meets, meet lots of folks, and bring back what he learns to us here at SPMA! We are very lucky to have Rob Dumouchel representing us as our new Member-at-Large, though, since he has lost about four pant sizes since beginning his Masters journey, some think his position should be changed to Member-at-Medium. “Joining and being active in Masters is really one of the best life decisions I’ve made as an adult. I’ve lost a lot of weight, I’m in the best shape I’ve been in in a long time, and I’ve made a lot of really good friends out on the beaches and pool decks around California.”

From a kid who was scared to death of the water to his newly elected position as Member-at-Large of SPMA, Rob has indeed come a long way. Growing up in Wisconsin, he started swimming competitively around age 11 and then swam a couple of years in high school. “I was fascinated with sea life as a kid but I had a few less than good run-ins with the deep end that left me pretty scared of water for a long time. So the early experiences were all stressful! It took me a long time to figure out how to work with the water instead of against it.”

His journey with SPMA began when he thought he would train for five months before competing in a local meet. Instead, an email from SPMA enticed him to attend an open water event. “My first Masters swim event was the Naples Island Swim hosted by the Long Beach Grunions. It was such a cool, fun, positive experience that I was just totally hooked on Masters by the time I got back to the beach from the race. From there I wanted to travel to every meet I could make my way to. I love the competition and the people. It’s a little tough to travel to all the SPMA events from way up in San Luis Obispo County where I live, but it’s worth the trip to me.”

That first meet came after a ten-year break from swimming, not that he wanted to take that break, but “…it’s just kind of how life worked out. I did a lot of traveling and working and I found myself getting progressively less healthy, gaining weight, and having blood pressure that was way too high for a guy my age! I decided a few times to join Masters, but always found an excuse not to. I guess I was worried I’d be too fat or too slow. I was intimidated by the idea of returning to a sport I loved, but wasn’t necessarily good at anymore. Eventually I talked myself back into a pool and made myself stick to it. My first swim was an excruciating 200 yards. Luckily, I’ve gotten much better since then!”

He certainly has! He has also done more traveling to more meets within our region than anyone I’ve heard of; twenty six in the past year! He has written about all those meets (and a whole lot more) in his blog, and has recently decided to take his blog on the road. “On top of racing all over California, I’m planning on swimming in Wisconsin, SCY Nationals in Atlanta, all five USMS Open Water National Championship events, plus Big Shoulders in Chicago, and the Chesapeake Bay Swim in Maryland.”

When asked what keeps him going, he replied, “My blog and my waistline! If I don’t swim I don’t have anything to write about so it keeps me swimming, and honestly I just want to be less fat so I try to keep moving as much as possible.”

Rob is a passionate advocate for membership in Masters swimming. He is regularly out at events, dropping in with teams, and talking to members in person and online about Masters swimming. His position as Member-at-Large is something he takes quite seriously, always looking for ways to make SPMA even better. “If you have feedback that you want to share about SPMA, I’m always willing to listen on the pool deck or you can get hold of me pretty easily via email. Being the Member-at-Large also makes me the Awards Chair and lands me on some other committees within SPMA. We have an excellent board in place and a lot of fantastic volunteers; I think 2010 is going to be a great year to swim in SPMA.”

When asked for advice or words of wisdom for those who are just beginning to get their feet wet, Rob replied, “Just get in and swim! It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you just show up… if you can get to the other side of the pool and back, there’s no reason you can’t come out to a swim meet. Beyond that, set lots of goals. Long term and short term ones so that you feel like you’re going somewhere. You are always accomplishing something meaningful along the way.”

Whether you have followed his terrific blog at Robaquatics.com, or met him in person at one of the many meets in our region, Rob Dumouchel is an encouraging, passionate advocate for the Masters program. He is also a fun guy with a great sense of humor and engaging personality. I can’t wait to see what he brings back from his travels. We will all surely benefit.

I’m stoked for nationals this year… it looks like it’s going to be spooky fast in a lot of events. After checking the competition in my races I can pretty confidently say that I will be having my ass handed to me in all of them, but I’m sure I’ll still have plenty of fun!

So here’s the general details… 1975 swimmers are registered, they letting you keep the 6th event if you signed up for it, and my team will be 8 deep this year so look out for CVMM on relays!

**Full results with splits for the weekend are available here

I had a very breaststroke-tastic kind of day today, which if you know me is a pretty odd occurrence. On top of a 50 free I entered the 50 and the 100 breaststroke. All my races went pretty well and I walked away with 2 best times!

I got to the pool early again today and took some time to warm up in the competition pool. It was a little cold in the morning and the pool had a nice layer of fog across the top of it. I probably swam around 500 yards before I got out and did a few starts. I was feeling really good off the blocks this morning. Afterwards I set my stuff up over by the Walnut Creek swimmers that I had gone out to dinner with the night before. It was nice to have a team to borrow while I was out of my region :)

My first race was actually pretty early today. The 50 breast was the second event of the day so I didn’t have to wait around forever before swimming. I had a fun little manufactured grudge match set up with my friend Sarah in the breaststroke events. Since the meet was set up women’s heats then men’s heats she swam first and gave me a baseline number to shoot for (not fair I know, but I don’t think they would have let me in her heat… even if I tried I would make an ugly woman!). Once it was my turn to swim I went with my usual breaststoke plan… stay underwater as long as possible and then flail as rapidly as I can until I hit the wall to go back underwater. I had a really good start with a long glide and a big pull down. I surfaced just shy of the 15m mark and started churning my way through what was left of the 1st 25. Off the turn I tried to get as much as I could out of the pull down and it was a scramble for the wall. I turned in a 31.90 which is a best time and my first time under 32! I think all the trash talking with Sarah leading up to the event helped shave the time off… I need to manufacture more of these match ups…

After the 50 breast I had  f o r e v e r  to wait for my next event. I hung out and talked with the Creekers, caught up with some of my PacMaster friends that were floating around the deck area, and hopped in the warm up pool a few times just to cool off because it was way hotter today than the day before.

Eventually the 50 free came around and I wasn’t feeling particularly “on” for it. My calves were tightening up and I was a little dehydrated. I managed a good start and some good dolphin kicking but my flutter kicking once I hit the surface didn’t really feel like it was connecting so well. I managed a mid 25 which is about par for the course this season. I really want to break into the 24′s at some point… we’ll see if I can make it!

My last race of the meet was the 100 breast. I haven’t done that race since last year so I wasn’t really sure how it was going to pan out. My best time was a 1:13.69 that I swam in the old UCLA pool. My major strategy for this one was all out till it’s over… it’s a complicated strategy I know, but I really have no idea what I’m doing with this race so it seemed to be the best approach. I worked the start as much as I could, and really leaned into my turns. I took it out in a 32.6 (which is what I swam last week for the 50 in Wisconsin!) and brought it back in a 36. I could feel myself slowing down a bit but I didn’t gas out which is good seeing as my strategy didn’t particularly account for that. I finished up with a 1:09.53 which is a monster drop for me and kind of makes me wonder if I should actually try to swim breaststroke every once and a while. It’s now officially faster than my backstroke!

After the 100 breast I packed up and got out of town! It’s a pretty long haul to my house from the East Bay. I lucked out and didn’t run into any real traffic so I’m pretty stoked about that. Now I just need to collect up my times to send to my coach because there’s some new team records in there, and figure out what I’m going to swim next weekend at UCI!

random relay action!

**Results for Saturday can be found here

Just got back to the hotel after spending all day at day 2 of the 2010 PacMasters SCY Championships. There’s over 900 swimmers in attendance this weekend and there are some ridiculous times being laid down in the pool! All I’m saying is some dude popped off a 4:20 in the 500 free today… wow… Although I didn’t doing anything close to that fantastic I still had at least one really good race today, more on that in a bit.

Since I was at this meet last year I knew that the facility is parking-challenged so I showed up way early to get myself a spot for my car and my tent. Seems like everyone else was on the same program because the deck filled up pretty early. I made sure to get in and warm up in the competition pool for a bit even though it would be a long time until I actually needed to. Afterwards I ran into my friend/grudge match opponent Sarah and we went and grabbed a little something to eat since both of us had a while until we had to race.

Race number one today was the 100 fly. I swam my current best time in it last year at this meet so I was hoping to do that all over again today! I had a killer start and dolphin kicked almost too far on the first 25. I think I only counted 4 strokes which is about 2 lower that usual for me off a dive so I must have pulled really close to that 15m mark. I felt really good through the first 50 and wasn’t feeling much fatigue until the end of the 3rd 25. I saw that I was up towards the front of the heat so I pushed what I had left to get to that last wall. I just barely came in second in my heat, but the part I was much more interested in was my new best time! I finally swam a 58 after a long time stuck in the low 59′s. I swam a 58.7… my next major goal is to get down to a 57 :) After I got out a few of the guys that had been watching congratulated me and talked to me about my start and how relaxed I looked in my swim.

My second race was the 100 IM and it didn’t go quite as well. My back was really tightening up and giving me trouble later in the day. I knew I was off my game when I wasn’t one of the first guys to hit the wall at the end of the fly. My backstroke was ok, I swam fairly straight. My turn wasn’t so hot though. I misjudged the distance and it came out awkward. My breaststroke felt decent and my free was just fine. My time was a 1:04 something… not bad but not great.

Considering how tore up I was feeling I decided to pack it in early and skip the 50 fly, I swim it all the time anyways. After the meet I went out to dinner with some of the Walnut Creek swimmers in downtown Pleasanton. Tonight I’m just going to take it easy and rest my back, it’s pretty pissed off. I have 3 events tomorrow to contend with and I need to lay down some hot times!

So I was supposed to have a little race action at practice today but my opponent was nowhere to be found… apparently “real life” got in the way of lunchtime recess at the pool. Oh well… we’ll rematch shortly and soon I shall take my victory :) In the meantime due to forfiture I’ve deemed myself the default Santa Maria Masters Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion of the World. (too much?)

The upside is I had another grudge match percolating with my friend Sarah B. for this weekend at PacMasters Championships anyways. Despite not being a breaststroker and that being her specialty I’ve decided that I should be able to beat her. There’s really no reason that I should be able to when you get down to it, but I don’t let that kind of logic cloud my judgement. We’re both swimming the 50 and 100 breast this weekend and my pride says that I have to beat this chick. I mean c’mon I am the Wisconsin 25-29 (uncontested) 50 breaststroke State Champion, an obvious force to be reckoned with in the breaststroke world! I don’t exactly remember how I managed to pick a swim fight with a girl, but it probably involved Twitter and Facebook trash talking. Anyways stay tuned this weekend to see who wins…

Back to what went on in the pool! We had about 7 or 8 swimmers today and one of the girls brought an old workout with her so we’d have something to do. I was pretty sore today from swimming and traveling and last night’s oceanic expedition, but I was still swimming pretty well.

600 mixer
400 kick
200 pull
300 drill/swim by 50

Repeat x 3 on descending interval (1:35, 1:30, 1:25)
4 x 100
between round 1 and 2 do a 200 kick, between 2 and 3 a 100 pull

3000 yards total

Tomorrow is basically resting and driving. I’ve swam every day since Saturday so I guess it’s time to sit one out. I’ll hit Pleasanton Friday night and be on deck at the PacMasters Championships Saturday morning though Sunday.

Yay Wednesday night ocean swim! Seriously the best part of my work week hands down. I met Niel down by the beach and after a little bit one more guy joined us to go swim. Looks like word is getting out about Wednesday nights! Awesome!

Since I’m between two 2-day swim meets I didn’t want to be a hero and go too far today. We just did half the triangle. We swam to the end of the pier, out to the far buoy on the south end, back to the pier and then back to the beach. I got to do a quick sprint in the middle when one of the guys went off course to the wrong buoy. I chased him down to stop him and turn him back towards where we were supposed to be going. If he got too much further it would have been seaweed city.

I’ve got more pictures on Facebook if you want to check them out!

Tomorrow I’ll be down in Santa Maria working out. One of the guys was in need of some motivatory assistance so I trash talked him on Facebook and challenged him to a race tomorrow. It’ll either be a 100 free or a 100 IM… Mike can normally steamroll me in practice but I have a feeling I can keep it close in a one shot 100 yard swim.

After a successful midwestern excursion I was back to my regular grind today. I hit Santa Maria for lunch to get in a workout and at first things were looking a little light. There were only 3 of us and everyone was planning on getting different things done.

After a little bit we doubled in numbers and a workout slowly materialized…

200 swim
200 kick
200 pull

250 free
2 x 200 free
3 x 150 free
4 x 100 free
5 x 50 free (with 1 50 fly mixed in just because)

2350 yards total

I felt pretty good in the water today, I think it’s because I swam SCM yesterday. I got to feel extra fast since the pool was shorter all of a sudden :) It didn’t hurt that I could actually breathe and wasn’t slowly being boiled alive. My trip to Wisconsin was a good reminder of just how spoiled were are here on the west coast!

I let my camera run on deck pointed at the pool and got a few good pictures out of it today, as usual there’s more on my Facebook Fan Page.

I love MKE, it has a recombobulation area at the end of the TSA line

So there is a ton of good swim stuff going on or coming up shortly, here’s the choice cuts…

First up for my SoCal Masters we have a meet at UCLA this weekend. This is our second chance to race in the new pool there and it is fantastic! Last year we had 250 swimmers at the UCLA SCM meet so this one may end up pretty large as well! More info and online registration is available here.

For my norther Californian friends we have the PacMasters Champs this weekend. I’ll be one of the 900+ swimmers in attendance, I’ll be on deck Saturday and Sunday! Psych Sheets are posted here.

If you’re planning on going to USMS SCY Nationals and you aren’t signed up yet you need to get it done this week!!!! Go here to register before the deadline on April 15th

I swam with a Masters group at the South West YMCA in Greenfield just outside of Milwaukee this morning. Jim who swims with the group and reads the blog gave me an open invitation aways back so I made sure to let him know I was coming to town so I could drop in and swim with him. He got me all set up with a pass so that I could come in and workout  with him and the rest of the group.

The pool is a pretty normal for a nicer newer YMCA pool… really shallow on one end, narrow lanes, and waaay too hot for swimmers. It’s a nice pool, it’s just not set up with the more competitive swimmer in mind. The one big surprise was that it’s a meter pool! I was not expecting a SCM workout at all so that was cool.

We had a pretty good crowd and the workout was just what I needed. Mondays are their more distance focused day which is good because I had a whole weekend of swimming to get out of my system! Here’s the workout I did:

200 swim
100 kick

200 catch up drill

1400 swim (150 swim, 50 kick)

12 x 75 free (descend 1-3)

600 IM

3400 meters total

I felt pretty strong towards the beginning but I have to admit that heat and stuffy indoor pool air got to me. It’s a hard thing to adjust too when you get to swim outside everyday. Upside to swimming indoors though is I can hold a straight line in backstroke thanks to the lines on the ceiling!

After the workout I hung out in the pool for a bit and talked to the coach who leads the group. He gave me the run down on what they’re all about and the big range of swimmers they have. The group is more fitness focused but they do have triathletes and even a swimmer who has been to trials. Anyone can swim with them, they just have to sign up for the class through the Y.

Once I got out of the Y I ran into one of the guys from the workout in the parking lot and he invited me out to breakfast with him. So I got to hang out for a little while and chat before running home to the hotel. Now I need to finish packing and start making my way towards the airport. I’ll be back in California tonight and I should be in the pool in Santa Maria tomorrow!
