There were only 4 of us swimming today, but we really made this one count! The warm up was pretty stock and then we did a short IM set just to get our hearts pumping. And then Mike dropped a motivatory bomb on us… 10 x 200! Boom! I know I need this kind of stuff, but I suck at it. Something about that distance just kills me. 150′s I like, but a 200 is a step too far. I managed to hang on through the first 7 but I had issues with the intervals after that. I skipped a 50 in there some where but made it up at the end of the workout before I left.

Since I have to go into work on Saturday this week I took today off which was nice. I didn’t have to rush straight back to my office after my swim and could actually take the time to chew my lunch. It was pretty glamorous. But even though I wasn’t working I still managed to spend almost all day behind a keyboard. Oh well. Tomorrow I’ll be back to work and I’m not sure if/where I’ll be swimming. We’ll see what happens.

Some of you may have seen one of my RobAquatics suits roaming the aquatic wilderness of various oceans, lakes and pool decks recently. Well now you can buy one if you’re so inclined! My friends over at Splish have added the RobAquatics suit to their line up and you can order dude and chick versions in whatever size you’d like. I think this is beyond cool :)

Guys, you can get your own RobAquatics banana hammock over here for $27.50

Ladies, you can get a RobAquatics swimsuit over here for $49.95

I realize my personal taste in suits is… um… unique. If the RobAquatics suit isn’t necessarily for you go check out the rest of the stuff on the Splish site. They make a ton of fun and interesting suits on top of doing custom work. I’m a big fan and have quite a few Splish suits in my collection.

We were a little worried that the weather would be gross today, the wind was predicted to be really wild, but that never really came true. It actually skewed more towards beautiful. The water however was colder than I would have liked. According to an NOAA buoy in the area the water got all the way up to 58 degrees in the last week… today it dropped to 54! I should have swam on Monday!

Anyways my swim buddy wasn’t there and after a while I decided to just get in the water and work on my cold water tolerance. I wandered out in just a jammer and a rash guard. I worked my way into the water in stages. Legs… reproductive organs… stomach… chest and arms… and finally my noggin. The whole process took like 20 minutes!

ahh cold water on my um... man region

Once I was out there and acclimated I swam a little bit but not too much. One of my big rules is to not venture too far out into the ocean solo. While contemplating a trip back to the beach the perfect wave presented itself. It was way bigger than the rest of the waves in the set and hit in just the right place. I sprinted into position and felt myself get picked up by the wave. It was awesome! I was on top of the wave so long I started to get worried I was going to land face first on the beach! I haven’t body surfed a wave that well since I was a kid. I’m still smiling about it :)

After I got out of the water Niel showed up on the beach. He got hung up at work. He decided to just enjoy the beach a little bit since I had already been in. Afterwards we hung out in town and had dinner and talked for a while. We should be back in business at the beach on Sunday for what might end up being a longer than usual swim.

I had a good swim in Santa Maria today, we actually did butterfly! On purpose! We did a set 3 times through that involved 6 x 25 fly with fins. It doesn’t sound hard, and it shouldn’t be hard, but honestly it felt kinda hard. I’m glad we got this in this week because I signed up for the 2fly at Mission Viejo next week. Oddly enough I also signed up for the 200 breaststroke… not sure why. Downside is I have to swim the 200 breaststroke (for the second time ever), upside is it rekindled my breaststroke grudge match. The Twitter trash talking has already restarted, so once again I’ll have to pretend to be a breaststroker in order to retain my bragging rights. Today’s workout had a touch of breaststroke in it which was good… my pull downs are feeling pretty sharp right now, I think I’m going to be a threat in that 2breast, just wait and see!

I’m definitely still feeling Sunday’s lake swims but I swam ok. I’m sore all over my upper body, but not necessarily in a bad way. The nice part about today’s swim was that we got to do it while the sun was still out. After our workout the weather got kind of ugly and it even rained a bit. I’m hoping that rain stuff doesn’t stick around and ruin another Wednesday night ocean swim!

A couple of weeks ago I spent the day with my team doing workouts at both CLU in Thousand Oaks and the Rancho Simi Pool in Simi Valley. I got some video from both workouts, I did a short interview with my head coach, and I passed that on to USMS to process into the video above. I think it came out really well! I’ll be helping USMS with a whole series of these throughout the summer as I travel the country on my Open Water Tour so keep an eye out for that! A big thank you to Ben for editing the video and making this so fancy, and Steve for helping me get some video from the deck during the backstroke clinic!

If you haven’t been there yet, go check out the stuff on the USMS YouTube Channel, they’ve been putting out some really good stuff!

Race results are available here: 2 Mile, 1 Mile

At the last minute I found out about this race and changed some plans around to go do it. I’m really glad I did! I counted it up and it’s been 15 swim meets since I’ve done an open water race… I was so over due that I felt compelled to swim 2 races today to try and catch up :) The way the day was structured I had the opportunity to swim a 2 mile race and a 1 mile race, I was pretty stoked to get that much swimming in today.

on the beach before the crowds started to show up

I got into the park early and was one of the first people to actually get into the water. They said it ranged from 60-64 degrees which is plenty tropical to me! It was probably the perfect temperature for a long swim. I didn’t really swim much to warm up, I mainly wanted to get used to the temperature so it wasn’t a surprise later when the race actually started.

My first race was the 2 mile swim, I was in the 3rd wave. The first two were open division (non masters) and I think they were all in wetsuits. My wave was 18-39 year old men non-wetsuit. There was seriously like 8 of us! At the start we all separated out pretty quickly… a few guys took off real fast, a few fell back and I apparently had the middle all to myself. It was pretty lonely going until I started reeling in wetsuited swimmers. I used them to help navigate to the first buoy because it was really hard to see with the way the sun was shining in the lake. I felt really comfortable on that first mile and just kept chasing down one swimmer at a time. I never caught any of the fast dudes in my heat, but I at least felt like I was accomplishing something whenever I passed somebody. On the second mile I felt like I held a pretty good pace and my lines were a little bit better now that I knew where everything was. Half way through it my stomach started cramping a little bit but it never turned into a problem. I probably should have drank more water than wine the day before :)

I finished in about 55 minutes and when I came out I heard the announcer talking about me. “Hey check out this guy in the Zebra suit! Nice! Look out for this guy he’ll be back for the 1 mile” I raised my hand over my head victoriously (despite not winning anything) and he said “rock and roll man!” Ahh yes… my goofy RobAquatics swim suit makes friends every where it goes!

I had an hour to kill until my next race so I wandered the beach and talked to some people. There was a Walnut Creek guy who I hung out with last week there, and I spent a lot of time talking with a guy who was out for his first ever open water swim. After his race he was hooked! Funny how that works once people actually try it!

On the way back into the water for my 1 mile the water felt way colder. Not unbearable, just colder. I guess it was from baking on the beach for an hour. The funny thing was all of the guys who did both races said the same thing. I was in the 3rd wave again, but this time we had more dudes in the line up. I got to swim around a few people my speed for the whole race and I felt like I took it out a lot harder than my 2 mile. The time doesn’t exactly reflect that, but it’s what it felt like. At the far end of the course I really wanted to stop and take some pictures since I had a camera stuffed in my suit, but I didn’t want to stop and give up any distance to the guys around me. Towards the end my stomach started feeling tight again, but like before it never turned on me. Note to self for my longer swims: DRINK!!!

After my race I hung out and took advantage of the free food provided. They had bagels and fruit and burritos and other good stuff. Overall I was really impressed with the event management. They took care of parking, food, the announcing was good, everything was right on time, and they gave out a ton of good prizes. I walked away with a bottle of wine, some goggles, a hat, some wetsuit lube stuff, and some other goodies. There was a little problem with the results from the 2 mile when they were first posted, but the event staff got that ironed out very quickly. By the time I got home the results were online, and now I’m just waiting to see the pictures taken by the photographers they hired to work the event (go here to sign up for email notice when they’re online).

On the way home I made a pit stop in Monterey for some Korean food and a walk down around Cannery Row. It was obnoxiously beautiful in Monterey today. Warm, light breeze, and tons of sunshine. I hung out on one of the beaches for a while and snooped around the tide pools looking at hermit crabs and sea anemones.

How unreasonably rad is that? My friends over at Splish made me a little surprise present that showed up at my office today. The picture above is basically a drawing of a weird dream I had that was the subject of conversation at a swim practice a while ago. I drew a picture for illustratory purposes and now here it is on a banana hammock! You can see the inspiratory post over here. I am so geeked out on this! My Santa Maria workout friends are going to die laughing when they see this thing. If you’ve ever felt the urge to make a custom suit for you or your friends/team go check out Splish and their custom suit builder. All very cool stuff!

In other news I’ve decided to venture north yet again for some open water goodness. As much as I want to go play with my SoCal friends I need the open water time seeing as I have races ranging up to 4 1/2 and 6+ miles on my radar for this summer. I’m going to do the 1 and 2 mile races. You can still register online until tonight here, otherwise it looks like they’re accepting race day entries as well. All the info is available here.

So I’ve got a bit of a dilemma… short course yards or open water? I had been planning to go to Irvine for the UC Irvine Masters SCY Meet… but… I just found out about an open water swim (well 2 of them) up north in Pleasanton on the same day. Not really sure what I want to do now. On the one hand I really want to see my SoCal swim friends this weekend, on the other hand I really want to start racing in open water again! Argh! Seeing as they’re at the same time and about 7 hours of driving apart it’s gotta be one or the other. This is going to drive me nuts all day Friday…

If you’re looking for somewhere to swim in SoCal check out the UC Irvine Masters Meet, if you’re up in NorCal go take a look at the Catfish Crawl Open Water Swim hosted by the Menlo Masters.

Someone get me a massage and an adult beverage stat! Oh boy… I just sucked today. I think my recent schedule all caught up with me in one day. Better today than this weekend I guess! I just never managed to get all the way into gear during our workout today. I loosely followed the workout, but modified heavily and spent more time focusing on stroke than speed. I had some FINIS Freestyler paddles and Forearm Fulcrums in my bag and messed around with them a lot.

Tomorrow I’ll be at work all day and then just hanging out around town in the evening. Saturday I’m planning to split for SoCal I just don’t know where yet. I’m hoping for an ocean swim somewhere, there’s also a CVMM butterfly clinic that I want to go to if I can figure out a way. Sunday I’ll be at UCI for the last 1 day SCY Masters meet of the season. While I’m talking about meets… if you’re planning on going to the SPMA SCY Championships in Mission Viejo get signed up this weekend to get in on the early entry fee, it’ll save you a couple of bucks and get your name in the program. You can register online here!

the Forearm Fulcrums have a bit of a learning curve :)

The weather sucks here at the moment. After a hot sunny weekend things took a turn for the worse and we’ve been cold and rainy the last two days. Mainly because I’m stubborn I went to the beach after work even though I knew no one else would show in this kind of weather. Out of principle I at least got in and messed around in the surf and took some pictures. No one else was on the beach, there were 1 or 2 people on the pier and they were convinced I was a crazy person. So um… that’s pretty much the whole story :) Here’s some pictures and even some video for you!
