For future reference, if you want to hurt all over do a swim meet and then spend some quality time in the ocean on consecutive days. It will seem really fun at the time but not feel so great later! As it luck would have it I’m totally doing that again this weekend! Turns out I like swimming more than making good decisions, oh well :) Anyways, today hurt a little bit. The workout was pretty decent and I felt the whole thing in my middle. The last set of the day was written as 2 times through but I don’t think anyone did the second round. We were running over time and a few of us have jobs to get back to!

In completely unrelated news… I finally bought an iPhone! Hooray internet, good bye social skills! Any recommendations for apps? Anything cool for the aquatically inclined gentleman?

Just wanted to remind everyone that the UCLA SCM Meet is coming up this Saturday the 24th. This will be my first meet down south this season, it’ll be nice to see all my SPMA friends this weekend. The part I’m most curious about is the new pool. They opened a new facility just recently and I don’t think anyone else has held a meet there yet. I’ll make sure to post a bunch of pictures of the new pool this weekend.

If you want to sign up online you can do so here until midnight on the 22nd. If you miss that deadline you can still deck enter the morning of the meet. I’m going to be there swimming the 100 fly, 50 free, 50 fly, and the 100 IM.

200m Fly Start

Just wanted to share a cool shot that my swim blogger friend Tracy took at the meet this weekend. She did her own write up of the meet here. She also posted more shots from the weekend her that you can check out

I was really excited to go swim in the ocean today until I actually went outside. After days of too much heat and sunshine I was greeted by a completely fogged in coastline. I was hoping for the best on the drive in because Avila Beach is pretty protected and sometimes doesn’t get fogged in like Pismo but unfortunately it was just as bad. There was no sunshine and you could barely see the boats that we’re anchored just offshore. As a consolation prize we had some of the warmest water temps I’ve seen since working out there. 61 degrees is pretty glamorous when you’re used to sub 60!

I went down onto the beach and set up my stuff and a wondrous funk drifted my way. I couldn’t figure out what it was, but it did not smell good. After much debate 2 out of the 3 of us swimming guessed something was dead somewhere. Eventually we found the culprit, a dead seal on the beach. It definitely wasn’t fresh and there weren’t any bite marks that we could see in it so we felt fine with getting in the water.

We had a longer swim than usual to get to the first buoy. The tide was really high today. Once we got out there we decided to go to the end of the buoy line, turn back towards the end of the pier, swim to the furthest buoy in the other side of the pier and then back to the pier and in. The water was alive today, it wasn’t rough but it was definitely moving. I think that’s what I like the most about open water swimming, you can swim the same stretch of water and it’s never quite the same twice.

I’m glad I finally got back in the ocean. I missed the last 2 weekends because I was out of town. Even though I’m swimming at UCLA next weekend I should be able to get in some ocean time because the meet is on Saturday. Speaking of UCLA, I need to go sign up online!!!

**Results will be posted here as they become available

The competition pool

Today was day 2 of PMS SCM Championships hosted by the Walnut Creek Masters. It’s a 3 day meet, but I just came up for the day (I miss the ocean and wanted to be home on Sunday for my Avila Swim!). Even though this is a championship meet for PMS it was more of a tune up meet for me since I still have 4 SCM meets left in Southern California to deal with. Being as such I went out on a limb and tried out a new event that I’ve never ever done as an age grouper or an adult… the dreaded 200m fly!!!

The 200m fly is one of those events that’s been on my to do list but that I am too much of a chicken to sign up for. When I was doing the web registration for the meet I decided to just put it in there and figure out if I would do it later. Eventually I made the conscious decision to tell people that yes, I am crazy and I did enter the 200m fly so that I would indirectly peer pressure myself into not “accidentally” scratch the event. I wasn’t really sure how to approach the event because I’ve never done more than maybe 125-150 yards of fly in a row before in my life. A few people asked me what my game plan was and my answer was basically “um… I have no idea… finish?”

There were only 2 heats of guys and my made up time put me in the fast lane for heat one. It was a pretty diverse heat, the ages ranged from me at 28 up to 72. Once we got up on the blocks I devised my plan, steady and relaxed. I had to turn off my sprint reflex and make sure that I spent as much time underwater off the turns as I could handle. I probably only spent like 55m of the first 100m on top of the water! Once I crested the 100m mark I was surprised that I wasn’t totally gassing out. I wasn’t able to get as much out of my walls anymore but my stroke wasn’t falling apart yet so I was pretty happy with that. I really didn’t start getting shaky in my arms until midway through the last 25m. I couldn’t believe it I actually paced a 200m race… I never do that right! Tracy, who also writes a masters swimming blog, got some pictures from the race for me that are coming soon to the internets. She sent me an early preview of the good stuff… check it out!

So down to numbers… I finished in 2:42.28 (equivalent to a 2:25 in yards for those of you like me that can’t comprehend what meters times mean). My splits break out like this:

33.92
1:13.33 (39.41)
1:56.88 (43.55)
2:42.28 (45.40)

My steady application of power program seems to have worked pretty well. I expected to slow as I progressed, which I did, but I’m really pleased that the drops were so small. If I would have swam that first 100 the way I normally swim a 100 I would have added way more time to the back half.

So that ends the good swimming portion of my day. I was pretty much wrecked after that. After the 200m fly I did a short warm down and changed into my Finis Amphibian suit so that I could finally test it out in the water. I floated around in the warm up pool for a bit and it wasn’t really feeling right for me. It felt kind of heavy almost, I can’t explain it, maybe I was just extra tired and it was compressing on me in weird ways. Like I’ve said before each suit seems to work different for everybody, and well this one isn’t for me. Anyways, I finally raced in it and my race was a bit of a mess.

I swam the 50m breast which is a total off event for me. I call it a palate cleanser because no matter what time I lay down it doesn’t really matter, I’m still not going to be a good breaststroker! I felt okay off the start and my pulldown was good. Things started to go a little sideways when I took that first stroke to get me to the surface of the pool however… turns out I was still like 5 feet under, whoops. I had no grip on where I was depth-wise in the pool which is totally out of character for me. I ended up doing this really awkward semi vertical stroke thing that pretty much stopped my forward movement completely. It was ugly. I thought I was going to get DQed for sure. This mistake totally took me out of the race, I never caught back up. Even though there was an official standing behind my block when I finished I never got told that I DQed so I’m assuming I made it barely legal. That swim definitely falls into the lesson learned category! Yikes!

I was so wiped out I dropped my 200IM, which was plan A anyways in the instance that I actually swam my 200m fly. All I had to do was hang out and wait for the 50m fly and I would be done for the day. I took off my Finis suit and threw on a drag suit and just went swimming for a while in the warm up pool. It started getting pretty hot around lunchtime so it was nice to just be underwater for a while.

When my 50m fly came up I decided to wear my TYR Fusion Tights. I’ve swam in them before just not in a race. Technically and aesthetically my 50m fly was just fine, but chronologically it wasn’t a winner. I was like 1.5 seconds off where I should have been. I just didn’t have the energy… the earlier race and all the sunshine kind of wiped me out.

Even though I had some off races, I had a lot of fun at the meet. I got to hang out with a bunch of my NorCal swimmer friends, and I got to borrow some shade from Coach Chris and the Mountain View Masters which I’m most appreciative of. Also I gotta say the Walnut Creek Masters did a really good job with this meet. The first 10 minutes were a little touch and go while they worked on finding timers, but super smooth from there on out. Good luck to everybody swimming day 3!

I’m hoping a lot of the Pacific Masters kids decide to make the trek down to Long Beach in December for SPMA SCM Champs, I think it’s going to be a hot meet. Fast swimmers, fast pool, and possibly your last chance to break out your techsuit collection legally!

The 2009 Pacific Masters Short Course Meters Championship meet gets going tomorrow in Walnut Creek with the distance events. I got a link to the Psych sheets in my email tonight, you can check them out here

I’m only swimming on Saturday. My schedule is pretty nutty… there’s a 200 fly (holy crap!), 200 IM, and a 50 fly and breast. That 200 IM might not happen depending on how I feel after that 200 fly, but I’m really hoping to lay down a decent time in the 50 fly. I want to get my 50m closer to a 28. Anyways, that’s the deal. See you guys at the pool!

I am up in Mountain View for the second time this month, the first time being the excellent Alan Liu SCM Memorial Meet. This time it’s for business, but I did have a chance to drop in and workout with the Mountain View Masters again. This time my meeting was scheduled a little bit later which let me stick around for the whole workout… I’m actually blogging from Google right now while I wait for my event to get started, shhh don’t tell on me :)

This is the second time I’ve swam in the Eagle pool. Last time I couldn’t find any of the walls. I kept taking really bad turns on the end with the bulkhead because the t’s are all faded off and we were doing SCM. This time around we were swimming SCY and it was dark out. Without direct sunlight the wall stood out much better and I hit all my turns just fine. This was an exciting development for me!

Anyways, here’s the workout I swam:

400 free

4 x 50 +:05
4 x 50 + :10
5 x 50 stroke drill

Repeat x 3
3 x 50
4 x 125
200 free

850 x 3

3550 yards total

It was a good swim. I shared a lane with 2 other guys and we moved along at a pretty decent pace for 5 something in the morning. Hopefully I’ll be back up again soon and I can drop in again with the Mountain View Masters. If you’re in the area, they’re drop in friendly and it’s $7 to swim as a drop in. Ok… I have to get back to what I’m actually here for!

So I guess rainy season has decided to come to California a little early this year, boo. Not that it’s a bad thing seeing as half the state tends to burst into flame on a regular basis, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. I was a little apprehensive that I would be the only person who would show up and swim at lunch today. I was totally surprised that upwards of 11 of us decided to go swim in the wind and rain.

Waiting on deck for the pool to officially open wasn’t too much fun. A few of us stood under a small awning that blocked the rain kind of, unless the wind blew at us at which point it would shoot large globs of cold water at us that had pooled on top of the awning! Once the lifeguard reluctantly took his position up in his chair I ran for a lane and hopped in the water. Being in the pool dramatically reduces the inconvenience of it raining outside.

Once we got to swimming the weather wasn’t too big of a deal. The wind got going really strong at points and there were little baby whitecaps in the part of the pool that are lane line-less. We had a set that was mainly backstroke and I turned repeats 2 and 3 into fly. I have a big fly race (I’m taking a crack at the 200m fly for the first time!) this weekend and I wanted to be ready for it. I’m still highly concerned about the distance, but cautiously optimistic that I will actually finish.

Here’s today’s workout:

400 choice
200 kick

4 x 100 free IM descending on :15 rest

Repeat x 4
100 IM Kick
100 back pull (I did round 2 and 3 fly swim instead)
4 x 25 back (I did round 2 and 3 fly swim instead)

3 x 200 IM @ 4:00 descending

2800 yards total

I’m traveling Wednesday night so I can’t swim then, but I’m planning on dropping in again with the Mountain View Masters on Thursday morning. Thursday night I come home and then Friday night I go back up to the Bay Area for the PMS SCM Championships. I need to get some kind of road warrior or attendance award! Maybe a classy patch to go on my parka… I might not be the fastest guy at every meet, but I do seem to be at every meet. That’s gotta be worth something right?

Over the weekend USMS put out a brief email statement about the whole suit debacle which pretty much says what I’ve been saying for a while… nothing has happened in months and something might happen in January. In the meantime anything that was legal remains legal in USMS sanctioned meets.

Here’s the exact verbiage from the letter:

The FINA Masters Committee has recommended that the FINA Bureau, meeting in mid-January, approve its recommendation that Masters swimmers be governed by the same swimsuit rules as the elite pool swimmers. If the Bureau approves the committee’s recommendation, it is anticipated it would go into effect after the Bureau meeting. If this recommendation becomes policy with the FINA Bureau, USMS will implement it for our sanctioned swim meets.

For the time being and until the FINA Bureau issues its policy for Masters, the June 1, 2009 ruling that allowed technical suits in USMS swim meets is still in effect. If you choose to compete in a USA Swimming sanctioned meet, you must follow USA Swimming rules.

it goes on from there to tell you where you can buy techsuits if you’re so inclined.

The whole thing is kind of a non-story, but I’ve seen the letter reposted all over the place so I figured I better share it with the 3 or 4 of you that haven’t seen it yet. In the meantime swim holes through your techsuits if you’ve got them! I have like 5 bodysuits, 2 pairs of leggings, and 1 shortjohn that I need to hurry up and put more mileage on! Oh and early January, SCY season, someone in California needs to hold a last chance meet before that FINA meeting! Get on it :)
