I was feeling a little sore in my upper arms today after Sunday’s swim meet, but I was still very excited to get back in the water. This is designated fly week at my Santa Maria practices so I was stoked about doing some of that. Turns out I’m pretty much the only one that is excited about that and today’s workout had a 100 fly as part of a 400IM and that was pretty much it. We had a set focused on backstroke so I repurposed that as a butterfly set instead. I had a good 50m fly in Mountain View but I could tell that if I want to do well with longer distances I need a lot of work.
Here’s today’s workout with my little modification in it:
Reverse 400 IM kick, drill, kick, swim by 25
Reverse 400 IM swim
Repeat x 4
2 x 50 kick on back @ 1:00
3 x 25 fly @ :30
1 x 25 fly all out @ :45
5 x 200 free IM
3000 yards total
During practice I had some yards to meters conversion issues with my backstroke. I took one full stroke like all the way over the wall (we have those water level gutters) up to my shoulder, it was kind of ridiculous. One of the guys who was getting in the pool late got a laugh out of it. It was a “dude, what are you doing?” kind of moment and I told him I was swimming in meters :) I think I need to wear a helmet on backstroke just in case!
Since it’s early in the season I need to start thinking goals and supplemental work. I keep saying I’m going to do a session or two with a trainer to get a weight routine going and it keeps not happening. I really want to get that in place early in SCM season before I start making the “but I have a big meet coming up” excuse to myself to talk my way out of it.
