I am getting really excited for Big Shoulders on Saturday morning in Chicago. This is my second 5k swim race and my second USMS open water national championship event this year.
This race takes place at Ohio Street Beach and consists of 2 laps of the race course that I traced out below.
There has been a lot of concern over the water temperature in Lake Michigan on race day. I’ve heard that they’ve recorded everything from around 56 degrees up to 72 in the last couple of weeks. Apparently it’s been at 70 degrees the last 2 days and the forecast is looking pretty good for Saturday. Personally I kind of want the water a little bit cold just for the competitive advantage. I’ve been sloshing around in water between about 56-61 degrees without a wetsuit for up to an hour at a time recently so low 60′s aren’t going to cramp my style any. It may force a few guys in my age group into the wetsuit division however :)
Anyways, I’m stoked to go float aggressively in the Midwest. A few people from my team are going to make the trip out, who else is going to be there?
