I got my Finis AMPhibian fullbody suit last night and I tried it on as soon as I got home. I’m a fair sized gentleman so I bought the biggest size available (34) and just hoped for the best on sizing. Usually the smallest suit I will attempt is a 36, but then again everyone uses a different sizing system and none of them make any sense so I just buy big and see what happens.

One of the oddities of this suit is that it has zippers on the bottoms of the legs. The upside is that it is really easy to step into and out of the suit. The downside is that you have little zippers fluttering right against the backs of your ankles. I haven’t gotten this suit wet yet so I don’t know if it’s a distraction in the water or not, but I think it might be. Plus if you have hairy legs it might be a little death defying to zip these things by yourself.

After being pleasantly surprised at how easily I stepped into the suit things took a turn for the worse. The waist was almost impossible for me to get past my hips. It has like zero stretch. You can see in some of the pictures that it trims my waist waaaay in. The jumping, wiggling and gyrations required of me to get into this thing were ridiculous. I would never put this on in a public locker room. This is a get-it-most-of-the-way-on-at-the-hotel kind of suit. Eventually I got it up and over my hips and then shoulders. It was on a little crooked but the thing is so tight that I couldn’t shift it around… and frankly I wasn’t going to take it off and try again. I was getting sweaty at this point for all the effort require to get in the goofy thing.

Heidi thinks that I look like a robot with the weird stomach panel. She also asked if it was a maternity escape hatch that could be removed in case of baby bump. I’ll admit the stomach thing is very odd. It also has some kind of strap across the middle that makes for some interesting lines if you’re a little doughy like me.

I’m not sure when or where I’m going to get to try this thing out in the water, but it feels like it would be fast. It might even end up on a friend of mine before I wear it underwater. The material is slick and the compression is borderline unreasonable. It’s not the type of suit that I would wear all day long at a meet like a B70 or my TYR Tracer Light. It would have to come off between events. On a skinnier person maybe not. No matter what happens, this seems like a pretty good deal for $60

I also bought a pair of Finis Hydrospeed race tights. They’re size 36 and might actually be too big for me. The waist is fine but they’re a touch too long. I recently got my hands on a pair of TYR Fusion 2 race tights and they’re also 36′s. The TYR suit fits tighter and isn’t as long. I think I’m going to try out both of these in practice to get a feel for them since I don’t have a pool meet until October to do my experiments. I’ll report back later.

One of my CSAM teammates that is also doing Big Shoulders next month forwarded me an e-mail from the race director that went out the day before I registered. The gist of it is space is running out! Here’s an excerpt:

BIG SHOULDERS UPDATE

Registration
We are getting ever closer to hitting the maximum number of entrants, meaning that registration will close. If you haven’t already registered – don’t delay, do it today. If you have friends who are waiting to see if it fits with their horoscope – the stars say “register.” Go to www.signmeup.com/bigshoulders

And while we’re at it, they covered legal swim suits as well…

Swim Suits

Apparently Michael Phelps isn’t the only one thinking about suits this year. We’ve gotten a number of inquiries about what is legal for the race. Bottom line – we follow the USMS/FINA rules regarding suits, so at least for this year, you can wear that super-fast, super-expensive suit for Big Shoulders if it complies with the USMS rules.

So there you have it. If you’re not registered soon you won’t be registered at all!

I went to Santa Maria to workout today and the pool was open this time, yay! I’m still kind of pissed that I drove all the way down on Tuesday just to find out they were closed for maintenance. Anyways… today started a little slow. We had to wait for one of the guards to sprinkle magic fairy dust into the pool because the pH levels were off. I’m no scientist but I doubt you can change the pH level of a 50m pool in 10 minutes by sprinkling mystery powders into it, but hey whatever. I wanted to swim, not debate my scientific theorems with a 19 year old lifeguard. I will share part of my hypothesis with the rest of you however… I think the pH level is off because the urine level is way down (ewww). School is back in session and the population of the pool has dropped about 94%. No more screaming children and having nerf balls land in my lane while I’m swimming. This pleases me greatly.

There were 4 of us there for workout today. I was excited to be back to a regular workout but my shoulders were tight as hell through the whole thing. I’m still a little stiff from Naples Island I guess. Hopefully I get this out of my system before my overly ambitious 5k swim on Sunday. Speaking of that…. I’ll be in Long Beach on Saturday and I think I want to swim in that buoyed off area down by 54th and Ocean in Alamitos Bay. Anybody want to go? I’m not 100% on what my plans are yet, but that sounds like a good time to me.

Here’s today’s workout:

500 kick/swim choice
300 reverse IM kick/drill/swim by 25

100 dolfin kick on back

7 x 50 kick on 1:15

6 x 150 free
1-3 @ 2:15
4-5 @ 2:05
6 @ 1:55

6 x 100 free
1-3 @ 1:30
4-5 @ 1:25
6 @ 1:20 (used it as warm down instead b/c we were running late)

2750 yards total

In other news, my Finis suits that I picked up for super cheap the other day showed up right after I got back to the office. I’m going to try them on tonight and see what happens. The full body suit actually looks bigger than expected but doesn’t feel like it would stretch as much as other suits. I’ve gone for and 85% of it not fitting to a 50% chance. This should be exciting.

Earlier today I booked a flight for my trip to Chicago for Big Shoulders and the USAS Convention in September. Since there’s a few days in between the two events I’m going to make a run to Wisconsin to hang out with friends and family. I grew up outside of Milwaukee so it’s nice to go “home” every once and a while.

So here’s what I need to figure out… where are the masters workouts in South Eastern Wisconsin? I’m going to be based around Menomonee Falls for my stay, but I’m not scared of doing a little driving. I got a link to some workouts at the Schroeder Aquatic Center that I can do everyday if I need to, but I kind of want the Wisconsin Masters Sampler if I can work it out. I think it would be fun to swim with a few different groups while I’m there. I’ll be in Wisconsin with time to swim on the 14th-16th possibly the 13th.

I contacted my old age group team (Menomonee Fall Swim Club), but they don’t have a masters group at the moment. They were cool enough to offer me some lane space if they had it available, but I don’t want to eat up lane space and distract the kids from what they’re supposed to be doing.

If you have ideas for me or are on a team that wouldn’t mind a random dude dropping in for a day either leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail at rob@robaquatics.com – thanks!

I’m out of my mind… tonight I registered myself for 10k worth of swimming split – between 2 swims! I’ve decided to make my way back to Long Beach for the second weekend in a row to do the Pacific Open Water Challenge 5k. This is masters sanctioned and was picked up in the SPMA open water schedule not too long ago. If you want to swim this weekend in Long Beach there is also a 1/2 mile swim and a 1 mile swim available.

All the information and entry details for this race are available at: www.pacificopenwater.com

The real reason that I decided to step up and do such a big swim is that I’ve been wanting to do Big Shoulders in Chicago for quite a while. I even blog-dreamed about it way back in March. Since I am going to be in Chicago a few days after Big Shoulders for the United States Aquatics Sports convention as a delegate for SPMA I stretched out my time on the midwest coast to make sure I could find a way to do this swim. I’m still figuring out flights and places to stay and stuff like that, but if nothing else I am now a registered swimmer for the event. On top of being a super cool 5k swim, this is also the USMS Open Water 5k Championships! This will be the 2nd open water national championships that I’ll have the chance to do this year (I swam the 1 mile open water championships at Lake Millerton back in May). I’m stoked, apprehensive… but stoked :)

If you want more info on Big Shoulders you can check out their website here and the entry form here

I just saw this on Swimming World Magazine today… Finis is giving major discounts on their whole techsuit line up. I guess they really don’t want to be sitting on a big pile of non-FINA legal swimsuits come January 1st.

I’ve seen some of their AMPhibian suits at meets and it’s fair to say they’re interesting looking… some people might say ugly. I posted the link on Facebook and one of my friends called them “icky.” So take that for what it’s worth, just remember it is a $60 or less for a techsuit that retails at $350. I bought a bodysuit and some race tights as a science experiment. Not sure that I can fit into the bodysuit, but worst case scenario it goes into my techsuit loaner bag.

You can check out all the stuff they have on sale right now here.

Anybody that has one want to interject on what they think of the Finis AMPhibian suits?

**Naples Island Swim results are now posted here

Welcome to the CSAM Gun Show :)

Today was my second time out for the Naples Island Swim. As expected the whole thing was excellent! Last year there was around 125 swimmers in the water, this year it was upwards of 210 swimmers!!! Awesome to see so many people out swimming and having fun.

I got to the beach pretty early today just to hang out, talk to people, and do a short little swim to acclimate myself to the water. The water temperature was about 64, not too warm but not that cold after the 59 degree swim I did in Santa Cruz earlier this month. A few minutes before 9 we got our race briefing and not too long after that a siren start. Like last year I hung to the left side near the pier on the start to avoid having to fight for position, I’d much rather swim up the side of the pack then through it. One strategic problem that I didn’t plan on having was being a right side breather. The last time I did this swim I was using more of a bilateral breathing pattern but I dropped that a few months ago. Unfortunately all the boats and islands were on my left for the first half of the swim! I had to breath to the left to make sure I didn’t swim head first into a parked boat or a dock.

I was a lot faster this year and I spent the whole swim in a pack. Even 3/4 of the way into the swim I was still hitting people’s feet and I even got my arms locked up with another dude a few times. The canal portion tightened up our group and I kept getting stuck between two other swimmers but I couldn’t pass them. Intermittently they would veer in from either side of me leaving me no hole to get through. I’m pretty sure it was just a coincidence, but I kept getting stuck. Luckily once we came out of the canal and started heading toward the finish we got a little room to spread out and I moved past one or two people. At the end of the pier I was right up on the feet of some guy and he kicked a huge wave of water right into my mouth, I almost hurled in the bay right there in front of everybody! Luckily no cookies were tossed and I ran myself in to the finish chute. I was wearing my B70 so we played “wetsuit or not a wetsuit?” for a second and then they gave me my popsicle stick with my finish on it. I’m not sure what my time was just yet because just like last year I didn’t look at the clock, I just wanted to get into the chute. It looks like I should be 18th overall and I finished 2nd in my age group. So now I am the 2 time defending 2nd place swimmer in the men’s 25-29 age group for the Naples Island Swim… it’s pretty prestigious if you ask me. If you’re a guy 25-29 and you want a piece of this I’ll see you at Naples Island next year, it’s your last chance to dethrone me before I age up :)

The big bonus of doing the swim for me was that I wasn’t out there all by myself this year, a whole bunch of friends and teammates were out today as well. My Conejo Simi teammates laid down some hot swims and there were some first time open water racers in the group. Julie was the first girl out of the water today in the 1 miler and it was her first time in an open water race! How cool is that? I think everyone from my team placed and went home with a medal. As usual the Grunions put on an excellent event, and I’m looking forward to seeing them again for the SPMA SCM Regional Championships in December and next year’s Naples Island Swim!

So uh… no body said anything about long course…

I swam with my adopted team, the Conejo Simi Masters, this morning. In order to make it to the 7am workout I had to leave Pismo at 4 in the morning! Yikes! I’m not a morning person so this was an exciting drive.

Everything was just fine once I hit the water however, even if it was long course. I thought LCM season was all over, apparently not. Here’s what I swam this morning:

300 free
400 kick
500 pull

4 x 50 free @ 1:00
4 x 100 free @ 1:45

200 easy

2000m total

The rest of the team kept going after the 4 x 100 set, but those of us doing the Naples Island Swim tomorrow were cut loose early. Now I’m off to spend the rest of the day floating around the greater Los Angeles area. See you in the water tomorrow morning :)

Quick reminder, the Naples Island swim is on Sunday the 16th in Long Beach. You can choose a 1 or 3 mile swim and this is a very accessible swim for the open water rookie. If you’re open water curious and in SoCal this is the swim to get started with. There’s still time to sign up online and you can even register race day on the beach. You can get all the details at NaplesIslandSwim.com.

I’m leaving town for Thousand Oaks super early Saturday morning to do a swim with the Conejo Simi Masters and then I’ll be out at the beach bright and early for the Naples Island Swim on Sunday. As usual I’ll keep my twitter account updated, and I’ll have pictures and a wrap up of the swim up sometime Sunday night once I get all the way home.

The big wild fire is still burning but Santa Maria was all clear with blue skies, a nice change of pace from the brown haze of doom we had on Tuesday. Attendance was kind of light and a lot of us had the luxury of our own lanes which was good because there was a lot of fly, back and breaststroke in the workout today. The original workout was actually much longer (too long for the allotted time), but it seemed like everyone had stuff going on back at work to take care of and nobody wanted to stay late to finish.

400 choice
4 x 100 kick @ 2:00
200 pull

4 x 50 fly/back @ :50

8 x 75 (odds: fly/back/breast, evens: back/breast/free)

150 pull
4 x 100 free IM

150 cool down

2500 yards total

That 4 x 50 fly/back turned out to be way harder than it should have been. I think we need to start doing more stroke work. We do a lot of freestyle which is good because I’ve seen time drops from it, but I also used to do about a quarter of all my workouts butterfly when I was training exclusively by myself. I need to start building my fly tolerance back up.

Tomorrow is either going to be an off day or an easy swim at the gym. Saturday I split for LA and hopefully find my way into a practice of some sort somewhere. Then Sunday is the main event of the weekend… the Naples Island Swim. I am stoked. Got an email today from my coach letting me know that we’re going to be around 12 people deep for the swim from Conejo Simi. If you want to swim and you haven’t signed up yet, you can still do it online or on the beach Sunday morning. You can get all the entry details here.
