**UPDATE 16AUG09: I swam the Naples Island Swim this morning, check out my pictures and wrap up here

I just got an email today letting me know that the 2009 Naples Island Swim website is now up and running. I’ve already registered myself online. It looks like I’m registrant number 3… I’ve been waiting to come back and do this swim again all year.

This year the Naples Island Swim is on August 16th in Long Beach just down the road from the Belmont pool where the SPMA SCM Championships are held. Costs are $25 now, or $35 if you enter after August 8th. You can get all of the entry details here.

The Naples Island Swim gives you 2 options: 1.25 mile swim and a 2.75 mile swim. I’m going with the 1 mile swim so that I can compare my time against last year’s and see how far I’ve come since then.

I swam this race last year and LOVED it! It was my first masters event, my first ever open water swim, and my first swim race in about 10 years. I couldn’t have picked a better event. The swim itself was really interesting. You cross under all kinds of bridges and swim past all kinds of swanky houses. The other big bonus to this event is that it’s being put on by the Long Beach Grunions. They are excellent swim event hosts.

If you’ve never done an open water swim this is a good SoCal option. I had no idea what I was doing last year and I came out just fine :) It is in salt water, but there aren’t any waves. It’s in a protected bay so you’re not fighting against the water. Plus if you’re doing the 1 mile race it’s pretty hard to get too off track. A lot of the race takes part in a canal, if you wander too far off course there is a wall there to remind you where you’re going.
