Today started off with a bit of a surprise… after 400 yards of warm up we went into 900 yards of backstroke. Upside was that it was with fins and it let me work on the tan on the front side of my body for a little bit. In an unbelievable turn of events, I actually have a tan at the moment and I’m probably twice as dark on my back as I am on the front. I’m working on a sweet goggle tan too, but luckily I wear big framed glasses that cover it all up. What I’m really worried about are the goggle strap lines I’m probably burning into the back of my bald head. Anyways… enough of that… back to swimming.

Here’s today’s workout:

Reverse 400 IM kick, drill, kick, swim by 25

9 x 100 back w/ fins, odds split kick/swim, evens swim

9 x 50 breast
(#1: 4 count glide down, 3 count glide back #2: 3 count glide down, 2 count glide back #3: 2 count glide down, 1 count glide back, #4 fast… repeat this x 2 and the 9th 50 is all out)

5 x 250 1-3 pull, 4-5 swim

50 cool down

3050 yards total

As much as I wasn’t a fan of the backstroking while it was going on I did need it. We don’t seem to do much of it and I am racing the 50m and 100m back this weekend in Santa Barbara. They aren’t events that I typically do, but it’s good to mix in some out of the ordinary stuff every once and a while.

I almost feel like swimming again this evening by myself in Pismo, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to remove myself from the couch once I get home. We’ll see.

In college, we had a practice every year where we all had to do either 10,000 yards of backstroke — straight through — or 12,000 of freestyle. I chose backstroke, and have the sun damage to show for it.

10k? Holy crap dude I can just imagine! I'll stop complaining about my 900 yards now…
