I was watching the Charlotte Ultra Swim online and I noticed a familiar face… our Masters Executive Director Rob Butcher was swimming in the B Final of the men’s 100 Breaststroke! How cool is that. He was out there in his USMS cap representing for the rest of us masters in some very elite company.

During a later race Summer Sanders was talking with Rob and she joked that she might get back into swimming via masters… um yes please. Not only would it be good for the sport, I had a huge crush on her once upon a time and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to see her at a masters meet :)

I did a short LCM workout this morning just to reacquaint myself with the concept of swimming 50m between walls. This was my last chance to swim LCM before my next meet so despite wanting desperately to sleep in, I had to get up and out of the house by 5:30. I figured that if I kept things short I wouldn’t burn my shoulders out right before the Santa Clarita meet on Sunday. Online registration closed last night, but you can still deck enter if you’re feeling like racing this weekend. I’m still a little sore from all the racing I did last weekend but I’ll live.

Since I’m swimming a 50 of everything, I figured I should swim a few real life long course 50s. My fly and free are fine. I’m a little concerned about holding a straight line on my back for 50m though. I might take the long way down the pool in a zig zag fashion… or just grind my face down the lane line. It should be fun for everyone except me. And after 2 50′s of breaststroke this morning… I think I’m only going to swim breaststroke during short course meets. The best part of my breaststroke is the part where I’m underwater, LCM is not going to be friendly to my times.

I’m not sure if I’m going to swim or bike or both tomorrow, but I definitely want to do something active. Santa Clarita is going to be a reality check baseline time finding type of meet for me and I don’t need to be in super rested tip top form. I just need to show up and swim as fast as I can that day so that I can determine what events I should swim this season and what types of goals I should shoot for.

Today was my first day out swimming with the Santa Maria lunchtime masters workout group. It was fun to swim with other people and they’re a really friendly group. It’s basically just a loose grouping of swimmers that take over half the pool during lap swim. I had e-mailed Mike down there about getting involved about a month ago but it took me a while to change my schedule around enough to make it happen. I’m thinking I’ll try to get down there at least 2 times a week and keep doing my own thing the rest of the week.

Luckily for me they were doing a really low key workout today. I’m still hurting from nationals and a few of them were there too.

Tomorrow I think I need to wake up early and go the opposite direction so I can swim some long course in SLO. I’m doing the Santa Clarita LCM meet on Sunday and I need to at least do a few 50m laps to reacquaint myself with just how long it is.

I got a great e-mail from Patrick who is a friend of mine that swims with Rosebowl Masters. He’s a regular at the SPMA meets and I mooch shade from him and his wife on a regular basis at swim meets. Patrick is a lot like me in that he took an extended break from swimming and is now chasing his times from high school. Well Patrick just took down young Pat in the 50 back! Here’s part of his note to me that I asked him to let me share with the rest of you:

I have been chuckling all day about a phrase you coined, in reference to doing better as an adult than as a fit and trim teenager, you had said when you went under 1:00 minute in the Butterfly, Old Rob had beaten Young Rob. Well Old Patrick has been chasing young Pat in the 50 and the 100 Backstroke since I started swimming in 2007. Well it finally happened Old Patrick caught and beat Young Pat in the 50 yard Backstroke, what a rush! Young Pat had gone 28.70 and felt that this was not ever going to be beaten. Well Sunday Old Patrick went 28.69, O.K. it was only by 1/100th but it was still faster than the swim in 1981. So in my mind all day I was laughing about Old Patrick beating up on Young Pat – that punk Kid. The score still stands Young Pat 14, Old Patrick 4, but the fight goes on.

Congratulations to Patrick and good luck to him in his ongoing battle against his aquatic youth! Next up is that 100 backstroke… it’s just a matter of time until he breaks the minute barrier and takes one more event back from young Pat!

Patrick and I at Masters Nationals in Clovis

Santa Clarita is hosting a long course meet this weekend on May 17th. I know some of you are thinking… but I just did Nationals, it’s lazy time. Personally I think you should give this one a shot. Think of it this way, you might just have a few hot swims left in you from this last weekend. Maybe your taper was off by a week? Who knows? Now is a great time to get out there and get some base line times for long course season in a super low pressure environment.

I’ve had some great swims at Santa Clarita and they always do an awesome job of hosting. This is the THIRD swim meet they’ve held in the last year! They hosted SCM in November, SCY in March, and now LCM in May!

I just signed up online for my own little sprint pentathlon. I’m out to get times in all the 50′s and I’m swimming the 100 fly while I’m out. You’ve got until midnight on the 14th to register online, otherwise you can deck enter at the meet.

Thank you to Santa Clarita Masters for stepping up and hosting so many meets!!! I’ll see you guys there.

I’m still riding high from a great weekend of swimming with my friends, but my body doesn’t share my excitement! My lats, arms, quads, and various other muscles are hurting. I’ve got some weird sunburn/tan-lines to deal with too. Tan feet, pale legs, a t-shirt tan with B70 lines burned into it. From the back it looks like I was wearing a sports bra… kinda awkward at the gym :)

Anyways I went for a little recovery swim this evening to loosen up my abused muscles. I swam about 2000 yards in a pretty casual manner. No sprints or fast stuff.

It was a pretty complicated workout, here you go:

Today at work I managed to negotiate some 2 hour lunches in the course of my week to do lunch time workouts with a masters group in Santa Maria. I’m thinking I’ll go workout with them twice a week and handle the rest of my workouts by myself as usual. This also leaves me room to make my way up to San Luis Obispo at least once a week to swim long course in the morning. But right now the plan is to drop in on Thursday and see how I like swimming in Santa Maria. It already has one big plus for me right out of the gate, Santa Maria happens to be the home to the closest In-n-Out burger to my place… mmm fatty post work out goodness…

I’m really impressed with the efforts Floswimming put into capturing Masters Nationals. They even made their way out to Lake Millerton to film the 1 mile open water championships. They were there on land and on the water filming us swim. You can find their Millerton Mile coverage page here. Here’s their video of the race…

The Fresno Bee was also out there taking pictures and talking to people. Here a brief excerpt from their article:

One of the swimmers to receive the loudest applause at the awards ceremony was 75-year-old former U.S. Olympian Dave Radcliff.
Radcliff competed in the 1,500-meter swim in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, finishing 10th.
On Monday, he placed first in his 75-79-year-old age group.
“[Master's swimming] has been a very important part of my retirement,” said the man who has beaten prostate cancer for more than 15 years and survived a heart attack in 1998. “It keeps you healthy, and if you do have problems you’re stronger and healthier and have a chance of fighting them.
“Being healthy and all, I’ve been able to fight through them and I’m swimming now and swimming better than I have for a long time.”
No kidding.
He set four national records for his age group during the USMS national championships that began last Thursday.

This morning I made may way out to Lake Millerton at the top of a dam in Friant, CA just outside of Fresno. I was honestly surprised at how pretty the race location was. The lake itself was excellent! 72 degree water with decent visibility, for a lake anyways. No weeds or any junk like that to swim through. From what I’ve heard there were upwards of 200 swimmers out there today, I’m still waiting to see some official results posted though.

After a race briefing explaining the course and procedures for starts and emergencies, I hopped in the lake and swam a real short loop just to get wet and used to the water. I was in the first wave of swimmers so I didn’t have much time to get acclimated. I wore my B70 for this race and it felt a lot better than it did during my 100 fly. Oddly it didn’t feel that buoyant in open water.

Since I’m still kind of new at open water I held back a little in the start so that I could swim my own race without getting punched in the head. Plus a lot of guys fizzled out between the start and the half way point so I overtook a few of them by just swimming strong and steady. I kept a much straighter line than I would have thought I was capable of. They had these giant yellow buoys that kept me on track. Midway through the swim I did have a minor accident with another swimmer. One dude was apparently way off course and managed to t-bone me! Neither of us was hurt, but it was a bit of a surprise. At about 3/4 of the way to the finish I was caught by a few guys in green caps. The green caps were the wave behind me of guys 45 and older. The 45+ group had some ridiculously fast guys in it.

I hit the finish at about 24 minutes which made me 4th in my age group. I don’t know where that puts me overall though, I’ll find out later when they post overall results. I’m happy with my swim. My first open water swim was 1.25 miles and it took me like 40 minutes so this is a huge improvement.

My coach from Conejo Simi Masters was there to watch me and she got to be my official photographer for the day. So most of my pictures were taken by Nancy. She also caught a picture of a super close finish that turned into a minor controversy. Two guys in the same age group hit the finish very close together. Even though one was ahead, his first step on the pad (we had chip timing) was with the foot that didn’t have the chip. The guy right on his tail stepped on the pad with his chipped foot first. Originally the guy that was behind was recorded as .2 seconds ahead, but after reviewing the photo the officials decided to make it a tie. You can see the picture that changed the race down below.

Photo finish… this picture changed the results of the race!

This swim was so much fun for me! I can’t wait to do some more open water events this summer!

Today was the last day in the pool for USMS SCY Nationals, I wasn’t scheduled for any races but I dropped in for about an hour to hang out and swim a little bit. I got there just in time for the 100 freestyle. I got to watch Rowdy Gaines re-break his 100 freestyle national record, and I shot some video for 2 of my teammates.

If you were out at the meet this weekend Floswimming did an awesome job of getting footage of hundreds of heats of swimming. Check out their Nationals Coverage page to look for your swims. Races are listed on the left side if you scroll down a little bit.

Here’s a different angle on my 100 fly. You can really see a lot more of my start and kicking from this vantage.

And a little more of my 50 free…

Tomorrow I’m doing the Millerton Mile which also happens to be the 1 mile open water championships this year. I keep hearing rumors that it’s pretty cold, hopefully it’s at least upper 60′s.
