**Individual results for the 2009 PMS SCY Championships are posted here.

I’m finally back from Pacific Masters Champs in Pleasanton. Today’s crowd was a little lighter and there were a lot of holes in a lot of heats from people no showing. I think some were tired out from yesterday and the others were trying to beat the heat. It was upwards of 90 degrees today! I hid in the shade as best I could and drank a few bottles of Gatorade in the process. I was very stoked that the action today was a lot faster. We were out of there by about 1 this afternoon. Personally I wasn’t feeling that great. My arms were pretty smoked from yesterday and my allergies were on the fritz. Pleasanton is a very pretty town, but I am allergic to the entire place! If I go to this meet again next year I’m wearing a scuba mask the whole time! But if nothing else it was really good 2-day-meet practice for me. It’s good to figure out how my body handles multi-day events before I head out to nationals in a few weeks.

My first event of the morning was the 50 breast. This is one of those events I like to swim sometimes just because. I’m not particularly competitive in it, but it’s fun to do. My problem with breaststroke is the actual swimming portion. On top of the water I’m not that great, but underwater I am dangerous. I tend to stretch my pull down to the verge of disqualification and then pop up and get to the wall as fast as I can so I can do another pull down. Anyways, my swim was pretty good and I took a little bit of time of my personal best. I’m now down to a 33.54.

I had a bit of a break after the breaststroke to contemplate my impending 200 IM. Frankly I was dreading the 200 IM all last night. Why I keep signing up for it I couldn’t tell you, I guess it builds character. I’ll admit that I thought about dropping it, but Ahelee sent low level coaching threats to me via Facebook and blog comments so I figured it was in my best interest to stick it out. The time I entered was a lot slower than what I swam at UCLA because I entered this meet before I swam at UCLA. Upside, I got to feel like a hero and win my heat. Downside, I didn’t have anyone on my tail pushing me. I swam a 2:26.95 which is almost a full second drop from my previous best time. It felt like crap though. My first 50 was excellent, I’m actually pretty curious as to what my split was… but that’s where the good news stops. The backstroke leg just didn’t feel right. My breathing was really off because my head was super clogged with my allergy problems. I think I was at least going in a fairly straight line. Breaststroke is where I hit the wall. I gassed out really bad. I was still moving as fast as I could but I felt like I was going to die. I don’t remember too much of the freestyle leg other than I kicked a lot and breathed too much again. I think it’s kind of funny that I’m my fastest underwater but I suck at holding my breath…

My last race of the day was also the very next event, the 50 free. I don’t have a whole lot to say about this one other than I didn’t do that great. My arms felt upwards of 900 pounds and I just couldn’t go any faster. I finished with a 26.33 which is almost a second slower than my current best time… yikes.

This meet was kind of a mixed bag. I did have some fast swims and 3 personal bests, but I didn’t feel like I swam as fast as I could. Not that I wasn’t trying, but my body wasn’t cooperating. Ultimately though, this was the plan. I planned a bunch of meets on top of each other for the experience and to get in some hard swims against other people that I can’t recreate in the pool I work out in. I did the same thing in February where I ran myself ragged for a month, took two weeks off from competing and then came back with a whole string of best times and major time break-throughs. Hopefully this works! I now have a week to get ready for SPMA Championships and the San Luis Obispo LCM meet.

Quickly, I’d like to thank the hosts for this meet – Tri Valley Masters and Walnut Creek Masters for putting on such a well run event. They managed to run hundreds of swimmers through two simultaneous courses incredibly smoothly. And thank you to all the people that timed… as I see it there needed to be about 32 timers seated at all times and that’s a lot of volunteering!

I realize I did a lot of complaining about how I swam, but I did have fun! Heidi, my live in videographer & special lady friend, decided to actually watch instead of try and take pictures of me swimming today… she did however get a few winners while we were hanging out between events. So here you go… me in Heidi’s sunglasses wearing my towel as a scarf. You’re welcome:)

200 Medley Relay Action!

Today was day 1 of the PMS Championships for me and day 2 for distance type people. We got to the pool around 8:00 and the place was packed. There were people everywhere around the pool and then there were a lot of people that set up shop outside the fences in the park area that surrounds the aquatic center. Heidi and I found a corner inside the fence that looked like it would have shade most of the day.

The competition pool itself was really nice and there were 2 other pools in the complex. One was set up for warm up/warm down and the other was a kiddie pool with a slide that was closed off to us old people (boo). The meet was very well run. With as many swimmers as there were there you would expect trouble, but the hosts did an excellent job of keeping it moving. They’ve even posted results already which you can see here! **UPDATE: you can get full 3 day results here.

My first race of the day the 100 fly. Unfortunately I showed up to the meet waaay too early and had to wait until around noon to actually swim. I knew this was going to happen, but I have an unstoppable need to be on time. The meet started at 8:30 and I was there at 8. Anyways, after a nap and my second warm up I got myself behind the blocks. In classic masters fashion the guy in the lane next to me shook my hand and wished me good luck. I really enjoy the friendliness of total strangers at swim meets… Anyways… I honestly didn’t feel like I was having that good of a swim. I really focused on doing as much kicking off the walls as I could because it just felt like my arms weren’t all there today. I had Heidi take some video of this race for me and you can see that she loses me every once and a while because I surface so much later than the rest of the guys in my heat.

Amazingly I managed to beat my time from Santa Clarita! I swam a 59.16 which brings my best time down from a 59.94. This swim checks off butterfly goal number 1 – break a minute again. Now I need to move on to butterfly goal number 2 – beat my 100 free time (58).

Waiting for my 100 IM to Start

Now that I had my first event out of the way the next two came pretty quickly. My 100 IM was good, but not great. Each leg seemed pretty decent, but I do think I took too many breaths on the freestyle. I came extremely close to my best time, but I’ve been stuck at 1:05 for a while now. This is the 3rd race in a row that I’ve swam a 1:05 something. Eventually I want to get this event down around a minute. I also got some video of this race, feel free to pick it apart :)

Last up was the 50 fly which was great except for an epic streamline failure on the start. I hit the water and my hands came apart a few inches and fluttered all over the place totally sapping my momentum off the blocks. I still managed to pull out a 27.05 which is pretty good for me despite the huge mistake at the beginning of the race.

I have 3 more events scheduled for tomorrow (50 breast, 200 IM, and 50 free). The way my body is feeling right now I’m not sure if all 3 are going to happen. Plus it’s supposedly going to be like 90 degrees in Pleasanton tomorrow! We’ll see how far I make it. As usual I got some pictures, here are a few extra shots from my day:

Getting my game face in place :)

Just got into my hotel in Pleasanton and found out that the psych sheets for nationals are up! I am in for a beating…

You can check out the psych sheets for Nationals and see where you stack up here.

Tonight was my last swim before the Pacific Masters Championship meet in Pleasanton this weekend. I’m signed up for the 100 fly, 100 IM, and 50 fly on Saturday and the 50 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 50 free on Sunday. I want to meet or beat a 59 in the 100 fly, go 26 something in the 50 fly, and go under 1:05 in the 100 IM. My Sunday events aren’t as big a deal to me. I still want to do a good job, but my focus is on those Saturday events.

My swim tonight was just kind of an easy trip to the pool to stay loose and keep my feel for the water.

The rest of tonight I need to get all my stuff packed and give my head a fresh shave. Out of curiosity, anybody know what there is to do in Pleasanton? I’ve never been there and haven’t had a chance to research what’s in the area.

The psych sheets for this weekend’s PMS Championships have been posted and you can check them out here.

There’s going to be a lot of fast folks out there this weekend and it looks like I should at least be competitive. Overall I’m in the middle of the pack or better in my events. Should be some really good, strong competition.

Thanks to Ahelee for tipping me off to this while I was busy at work!

After being deprived of my precious lane of choice for a while yesterday, I was very excited to see that I had the pool completely to myself tonight. I probably swam 1700 yards before anyone else ventured into the pool.

The main event of the evening was my pyramid of butterfly. I’m swimming the 100 fly this weekend and I need to make sure my fly tolerance is up to par. I really want to meet or beat my time at Santa Clarita (59.94). The set hurt way more than it should have. I’m glad I did it, but I didn’t necessarily feel that way while it was happening!

In other news… USMS VP of Local Operations, SPMA Registrar, and fellow former Wisconsinite Julie Heather is featured on the front page of the USMS website. You can read the article about all the good work she does for masters swimming here. USMS has been running a series of “Day in the Life of” interviews with various elected volunteers within masters swimming. They really give you some perspective on how much time and effort people put into making masters successful for all the rest of us to enjoy. Check out the Features page to read more.

If you’re into swimming and also “under-employed” or looking for a new job, you may want to check in with Swimming World Magazine. They’re currently looking for aquatically inclined folks to hire for advertising sales. Read more about what they’re looking for here.

I’ve gotten to the point where I have “my” lane. No one else knows this, but the far lane by the wall at the Pismo Beach Athletic Club after 8PM belongs to me. Sorry, that’s just how it’s gotta be. They need to make up a little sign so people get the word.

So imagine my shock and displeasure when I got to the pool tonight and there was some dude floating in my lane… grrr. I had to start my swim in the janky middle lane. I had walkers in the lane next to me and big plastic circles for the filter system in the middle of the flip turn “T” on each wall. Lame. Mid way through my warm up the trespasser got out of the pool so I grabbed all my stuff and floated down to the end of the pool before someone else could snag my precious…

Here’s tonight’s workout:

I felt really strong in my first 1000 yards but I sort of gassed out after that. I finished everything that I wrote out for myself but at a much lower intensity than I meant to. I probably swam 3 of the slowest 200 IMs humanly possible. Hopefully I can kind of build up my swimming through the week so that I’m good and ready for the Pacific Masters Championships this weekend. I’m planning on swimming Saturday and Sunday so I have a bunch of races I need to be ready for. I don’t feel particularly ready at the moment but I’ve got 3 more days to work on it before I have to drive up to the bay area.

It’s a gorgeous day out here on the central coast so I decided to hop on the bike for the first time in a while and spend some time pedaling. I’ve been traveling a lot and have been neglecting my bike so it was a lot of fun to get out there today. I let the season dictate my route. It’s spring break time so Pismo is packed with about 95% of the population of the Central Valley. They seem to only travel in gigantic diesel trucks pulling trailers so I figured it was in my best interest to avoid the beach. Instead I went inland towards Lake Lopez to avoid being run over, plus there’s all kinds of great wild flowers in bloom right now.

I rode about 6 or 7 miles into the inland portions of Arroyo Grande. My legs felt pretty good even though I haven’t been on the bike for more than just commuting since sometime in February. The view was very pleasing aesthetically but not so much allergetically… now that I am home I am sneezing like a mad man. The downside to everything being beautiful and in bloom is that it freaks out my allergies. Oh well. I’m just happy to have gotten in a ride. All told I probably rode 13 or 14 miles, I’d like to be back up to more like 30-40 miles per ride again once I get past USMS Nationals.

As usual I took some pictures while I was out, here you go…

I play with the internet for a living so I have a tendency to pay real close attention to where my website’s traffic comes from. I took the searches that brought visitors to my site and picked out some of the ones that came in question form. I did this with my business’ web site a few months ago and it was kind of fun so I thought it would be amusing to do here too. So here we go… these are all actual searches.

  • Swim anyone??????????
    Yes please

  • How many lengths of a swimming pool is 2.5k?
    Depends… 50 lengths in a 50 meter pool, 100 lengths in a 25 meter pool, and 109 1/3 lengths in a 25 yard pool.
  • How to get a masters swim card?
Click the giant “Join Masters” button on the left hand side of the site or go to www.usms.org/reg/ and follow the directions. You can do the whole thing online in less than 10 minutes, easy.
  • Masters swimming Sweden 2010 qualifying times?
These were just recently posted, you can get the link to the time sheet here.
  • How good is the TYR Tracer Light?
Personally, I really dig it. You can read my review here
  • How many swims does Tracer Light have?
I’m up to 3 meets and 13 races and it’s still in great shape.
  • Are SwimPlan workouts good?
They weren’t really my thing, but I think the site is useful and a good deal (it’s free).
  • Did the old Blossom Athletic center in San Antonio have a high dive board?
    No idea hombre.
  • Difference between Blueseventy Reaction and Sprint?
About $100 :) Basically the Sprint is an entry level suit and the Reaction is more serious (I own a Reaction wetsuit). Check out the specs on Blueseventy’s website.
  • How do i get a second off my 100m?
Swim faster by about a second :) If that doesn’t work, try focusing on tight streamlines off the walls. You’re never faster than when you’re pushing off a wall, don’t give up any of that momentum with a sloppy streamline.
  • How to tell if your lawn needs water?
I seriously got a visit out of this? I guess if it’s brown it’s time to go to work. But don’t take my word for it, I rent.
  • I think rob like me
    Sure buddy.
  • Is 27.7 50 free yards good time?
Anything can be a good time depending on age and physical condition. If you’re happy with your time it sounds like it’s a good time to me.
  • Is it good to swim without a bathing cap?
If you’re bald like me, yes. If you have hair… I am not the person to ask.
  • What does swimming unattached mean?
It means that you are a registered member of USMS but you are not a member of any particular team. Really the only thing it stops you from doing is swimming on relays.
  • What to expect at swim meets?
I wrote a whole post about it here
  • What’s a good time in to 200 im in swimming?
To me, my 2:27 (SCY) felt pretty good. I’d like to go 2:15ish some day.
  • Which suit is faster jammers or leggings?
I’d have to say leggings. They’re giving you more slicker than skin surface to work with.
  • Who wears square leg suits?
Not me, but I do own one.
  • Why do i get seasick when i swim laps?
Sounds like a weird inner ear thing. Maybe you just need ear plugs. Ask your doctor.
  • So there you go. Random questions answered randomly. If you actually have a question for me feel free to ask. I can’t promise to actually know the answer to anything, but I might know the right person to ask. Worst case scenario I am an excellent Googler.

Tonight I just wanted to get in a solid amount of distance (for me anyways). Normally I would do more sprints or sets of shorter distances but tonight I just wanted to keep a steady pace for about 45 minutes to an hour. I swam 2500 yards total in about 50 minutes. I did mix in one 100 fly out of principle. I figure if I’m going to continue to get better at it I have to swim fly every time I hit the pool.

    Here’s tonight’s workout:

    100 kick
