Grrrr… blood pressure. Went to the doctor today to try and get a better handle on my BP. Despite losing weight and being active it is still impressively high so it’s medicine time. Boo. It shouldn’t affect my swimming. I just hate going to doctors, taking pills, and dealing with health insurance stuff. So that’s no fun, plus I’m transitioning to the busiest part of my month on Wednesday. I can’t wait to get to the meet at UCLA so I can blow off some steam and get back into my happy place.

Anyways… back to things I like. I hit the pool kind of late tonight. This extra hour of light is wonderful but it’s still throwing off my ability to tell what time it is. I got in around 8:30 and had the pool all to myself for about 90% of my swim. I felt pretty good on the front half of my workout. Once I got to the end of my butterfly set I was all out of juice. I still finished the distance I prescribed for myself but not at the same intensity I normally would.

I’m really going to make a big effort to get in and swim a lot tomorrow because I’m having my biggest distance month so far this year for Go The Distance. I need to set the bar as high as I can for April! If you haven’t signed up for GTD, you really need to. It’s FREE, and a really good way to track how much you actually swim. I dig it.

Ok, so yesterday I spent the afternoon entering meets, picking events and reserving hotel rooms. I decided to man up and basically enter everything. The idea is to beat myself up with races like I did in February and then recover during the 2 week break between SPMA Championships and USMS Nationals. In February I did 3 meets in 3 straight weeks and put up performances of varying quality, but once I got some rest and came back for March I killed it in every race I swam. I’d like to do that again :)

Here’s what I’ve entered:

UCLA on April 4th: 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Breast, and 50 Fly

Pacific Masters Championships on April 18th & 19th: 100 Fly, 100 IM, 50 Fly, 50 Breast, 200 IM, 50 Free

San Luis Obispo LCM on April 25th: 50m Fly, 100m Fly, 50m Free, 100m Free

SPMA Championships on April 26th: 200 Free, 50 Breast, 50 Free

I’m swimming some off events for the experience just see what happens. Plus there’s no personal pressure for me to do super fast in a lot of these events. If I don’t set the world on fire with my 50 breast stroke it won’t bring me down. Speaking of breaststroke… I have a feeling that with a little practice I could be ok at it. I was never any good at it as a kid but I’ve had some pretty decent breaststroke races this season, especially considering that I don’t really train that much for it.

I came across some cool photos today by a guy named Georg Oddner who was a famous Swedish photographer. The lady in the picture is named Kiki Håkansson and she was the winner of the first Miss World Beauty pageant in 1951 (source: wikipedia).

You can check out more of Oddner’s work on the Malmö Museum’s website. The site is in Swedish, but I think you’ll be able to decipher the pictures. If you just need to know what it says ask nice and I might translate for you :) …speaking of uses for my ability to speak swedish… 2010 world masters championships are in Sweden and I’ll trade interpretor services for airfare, room and board. Sounds fair yeah?

I skipped going to the pool Thursday night because Heidi made my favorite dinner (smoked chicken mmmmm…) and I promptly fell into a food coma when I was done… no swimming was to be had last night. As a “make up” I decided that I would go to SLO again early this morning and get in an LCM workout there.

I’m still getting used to long course… I really like it for distance freestyle, but it is very weird feeling for my other strokes to go so far without hitting a wall. This time I swam in the fast lane by myself for most of the workout. I was right next to a team swim and I think it was a mix of senior age groupers and some masters… not totally sure. Maybe I need to suck it up and drive to SLO on a regular basis to swim coached workouts. Anyways, towards the end of my swim I got a lane mate that I gained 50m per 100m swam on. I would let him get to the far wall before I pushed off and I’d catch him at the end of the 100. He didn’t really get the concept that if somebody gains that much on you you should stop at the wall and let the faster person through. Ahh the joys of showing up during lap swim.

I felt the urge to go further but I had to get to work. Next time I need to get there right at 6 so that I have enough time to get in a swim and get back to the office in time for work.

I wrapped up my day with a late trip to the gym for a little dryland action. I’ve been feeling a little heavy and as much as I don’t like it, the elliptical machine really seems to help me slim down. I sweat like a beast on that thing! I spent about 30-35 minutes grinding on the elliptical and a few minutes playing with some weights just because. Tomorrow I’m probably going to end up in the pool in SLO again because I need to take Heidi’s car in for an oil change… I don’t really miss an excuse to swim in a nice pool do I? :)

I’m working on planning out my April and I think I’m going to swim pretty much all over the place. Here’s what’s on my radar at the moment

April 4th: UCLA SCY Meet(already signed up – swimming 200 IM, 50 Fly, 50 Free, and 100 Breast)

April 17-19th: Pacific Masters SCY Championships in Pleasanton, CA

April 25th: San Luis Obispo LCM Meet – yes you read that right… Long Course Meters

April 24-26th: SPMA Championships in Mission Viejo

So here are my thoughts… swim UCLA as planned, spend the 18th & 19th swimming up north during Pacific Masters Championships, swim in SLO on the 25th and then spend the 26th in Mission Viejo for SPMA Champs. A little ambitious, but honestly if I’m not at a meet on the weekend I’m probably just sleeping in and watching TV.

Out of curiousity, is anyone going to Pacific Masters SCY Championships? I’ve only been to one meet in that LMSC so I don’t really know too many people up that way.

**UPDATE 27APR09: We have a winner! See who it is here.

Southern Pacific Masters is looking for nominations to help find their coach or the year. I pasted in some info for you guys that Ahelee, the SPMA Coaches Chair, posted to the SPMA Facebook group explaining how to nominate your coach.

SPMA COACH OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS ARE DUE IN LESS THAN A WEEK!
Nomination Instructions: (DUE 3/31)
The selection criteria are as follows: The Coach of the Year is selected on the basis of inspirational and instructional qualities; club and individual accomplishments, including championships and world records; and non-competitive club and individual accomplishments, including club size and growth, club participation, volunteering, and events run by the club; and the coach’s service to SPMA, USMS and other Masters organizations, participation in clinics, and published works.

To nominate your coach, provide a letter listing his or her accomplishments, and a maximum of four letters from your teammates supporting your nomination.

Nominations are due by 3/31/09 and should be submitted to the SPMA office by email (pdf, Word, or text file) at registrar@spma.net. Total size for the file(s) must not exceed 1 MMB per application. Submit as one email, not separate emails for each.

I don’t know what the other LMSCs are doing but I’m pretty sure they work along the same lines.

USMS posted an “urgent notice” to the homepage today regarding speed suits in competition (read the whole thing here).

Here’s the long and short of it… USMS is adopting the new rules from FINA and they have no idea which suits are going to be legal for Nationals in May because the FINA approved suit list doesn’t exist yet. The deadline for manufacturers to resubmit their swimsuits to FINA for testing is 31MAR09. In the meantime everything that has been legal remains to be legal until decided otherwise.

One rule that I find contentious is the 1 suit rule. I think you should only be able to wear 1 speedsuit, that’s totally reasonable to me. But I think you should also be able to wear a brief underneath a speed suit, or a regular training suit for the ladies for modesty/privacy. I’ve seen a lot of holes in the rear ends of speedsuits and some are notorious for becoming see-through so I think allowing a small suit underneath is kind of necessary. The notice on the USMS website references the one suit rule repeatedly but also mentions the usage of a modesty suit. I’ve sent an e-mail to the rules chairperson to get an official clarification on this matter.

UPDATE: I e-mailed the Rules Chairperson and she got back to me very quickly, thank you! She told me that as long as the suit worn underneath another suit is for modesty only and not for additional compression or flotation it is allowable. So for example it is ok that I wear a basic speedo brief underneath my Tracer Light.

I know a lot of swimmers out there workout every morning… that’s not me. I’m usually in the pool around 8PM. I would workout even later if my pool were open later, I’m just wired like that. Last night I spent an hour on the elliptical instead of swimming with the idea that I would swim this morning. Amazingly I actually woke myself up at around 5:50 (in the morning!) to go and swim LCM at the pool in San Luis Obispo. After finding all my swim stuff and stumbling around the house for a bit I hopped on the bike and pedaled over to my office to get my truck. After getting to the pool I spent a few minutes on deck looking for a hole in a lane with somebody fast enough that sharing wouldn’t be awkward. There are some slow, medium, fast signs for the different lanes but they aren’t necessarily relevant to what is going on in the water. I hopped in with a guy that was moving along pretty decently (in the “slow” lane) and we kept a solid 50m between each other until he got out. My lane mate was replaced a few minutes later by somebody who did the exact same thing, I totally lucked out there. As much as I hate sharing a lane, sharing a lane in a 50m pool isn’t that bad because you have to cover sooo much distance to pass somebody.

My workout was pretty simple, 1500ish meters all free except for one length of butterfly. I only stuck around for about 30 minutes because I had to make my way back to work. I’m trying to make this a semi-regular occurrence to hit the pool and swim long course. When LCM season rolls around I think the work I’m doing now to get used to the distance will pay off. Depending on how my day goes I might swim tonight as well.

I finally got myself entered into the USMS National meet coming up in May. I booked a room a while ago, but I’ve been waiting to actually qualify for some events before I entered the meet. You don’t have to qualify to swim by the way. Any USMS registered swimmer can do up to 3 events without meeting the qualifying times (qualifying times are listed here). You can swim up to 6 if you qualify in the other 3 events.

I am going to swim on Friday and Saturday in the 100 fly, 50 fly, 50 free, and my wildcard event… the 200 breast. The 200 breast is the wrong event at the right time. I figured why not. I was going to try this one out at Long Beach in December but it was too late in the day and I needed to drive home. Hopefully I’ll be able to swim a few relays while I’m there too.

Don’t forget that the USMS 1 Mile Open Water Championships are the Monday right after the meet in a Lake out in Fresno. I want to drive back out and do this swim if I can get the time for it. You can read more about the open water event here.

While I’m still basking in the excitement of hitting my goal time in the 100 fly, I am faced with the reality that I have to keep working if I want it to happen again. After a lazy Sunday of just sleeping, watching tv and writing e-mails I had to get back to swimming today. I’m feeling pretty sore in my lower back and in the outer parts of my shoulders but not in a bad way. I hit the pool tonight and put in a pretty decent swim. I’m still doing a lot of butterfly. One of these days I want to be that crazy guy who signs up for the 500 and does it all fly like it’s nothing… that day isn’t anytime soon, but it’s on my list.

In other news… I bought a second neck to ankle type of swim suit. You can see me in it there on the left checking my shoulder straps. Instead of getting another nice fancy one like my Tracer Light (which I love so far), I got a cheap one in the name of science. I was on the USMS Forums and some people were talking about some of the cheaper off brands coming out of China like Ying Fa. Since there is no US distributor for these brands you have to get them on Ebay. One of the posters recommended a seller based in Illinois (most selling this stuff are in China) and I decided to pick up a suit for cheap and see what happens. I bought a suit that is equivalent in coverage to my Tracer Light for about $70 delivered. The suit I ended up with is branded with NSA on it which apparently stands for National Sports Association… which nation and which sports I don’t know, but hey who cares it was only $70. The suit showed up today and I’ve already tried it on. The construction is decent and the seams are stitched in the similar flat broad way my TYR suit is. The material itself isn’t as nice though. It feels like that same sort of stuff a regular workout suit is made of. It is however stripy like a Speedo fastskin type of suit but only in looks, not function. The suit also doesn’t compress your body like the higher end suits do, it really just feels like an overgrown workout suit. I’ll have to reserve my final judgment until I actually get a chance to race in it. I’m curious to see how it stacks up at less than 1/3 the price of the more popular speedsuits.
