Found some cool work by an artist named Sam Green. His work is especially impressive when you consider he’s working in just paper and pencil.
Nothing real exciting in my workout tonight. I swam about 1600 yards focusing on a nice smooth, long stroke. I’m doing a SCY 1650 tomorrow so I figured I should do a swim just to stay loose and focus on some of the basics.

In other exciting masters swimming news… 14 masters world records were broken at the Ron Johnson Invitational in Phoenix. Amongst the record breakers was Ande Rassmussen from Ande’s Swim Blog who was on two relays that broke records and narrowly missed breaking the record in the 45-49 100IM. I would keep an eye on his blog to get the details from the man himself. For more info on the records set at the Ron Johnson Invitational check out Swimming World Magazine.
I’ve been a little wrapped up in life in general today. I’ve had real estate on the brain. I live in a part of California that is nice and mellow and beautiful that also happens to be incredibly expensive. The upside to the economy tanking is that there is some affordable properties out there for me to swoop up. The downside has been this magic window of opportunity has also coincided with a massive tightening of the credit markets… boo. Well I finally managed to get some mortgage pre-qualification action and I’ve been checking out some stuff in the neighborhood. It was about 9PM when I realized what time it was so me and Heidi made a late night run on the gym. I did half an hour on the elliptical machine and made it out just before they were about to close for the night.
I wanted to swim but there just wasn’t any time tonight. I am doing some breaststroke research however! I’ve been watching this video of van de Burgh breaking the 50m breast world record and him winning the 100m breast. I’m trying to dissect his stroke and see what I can change in mine to get a little bit faster. There’s probably a lot for me to learn in there seeing as he goes about 10 seconds faster than me in the 50… yikes…
In other news… TYR has filed suit against Speedo and USA Swimming accusing them of conspiring to squeeze other brands out of the speedsuit picture based on false claims and faulty science. Check out more of the details over at the SCAQ Blog.
I went back to the pool today after a 3 day break… it was supposed to be a 2 day break but I wasn’t really feeling it yesterday. Tonight I rode out and got in a decent swim. I decided to mix in a fair amount of breaststroke to start getting ready for the 200m breast that I decided to sign up for in Long Beach.

I’m still trying to diagnose the lack of speed in my breaststroke. During my hundred I only took about 8 strokes per length of the pool (SCY) which seems pretty good to me, but the speed isn’t really there. Plus I seem to lose a lot of momentum when I transition from the underwater pulldown to actually swimming at the surface. Not sure if I just need to turn it over faster or what. I’ve got a few weeks to watch some videos online and figure it out.
Ok so I have finally signed up for the SPMA Championship meet in Long Beach and I’m really excited to go. I’m going to get to Long Beach Friday night and then swim on both Saturday and Sunday. It looks like I may be flying solo down there but I am now attached to Conejo Simi Aquatics so at least I’ll have a team to hang out with. Plus I have some people I’ve met through the blog that I’m hoping to get a chance to meet in person.
On Saturday I will be swimming in the 50m Fly, the 50m Free, and it looks like I’ll be in some relays. My goals for both 50′s remains the same – break :30. On Sunday I’m going to do the 100m Fly and… get ready for it… the 200m breaststroke. Yeah I have no idea why I did that. I’m a self-confessed non-breaststroker but I’ve been on a kick recently to try new events. I’m doing a 1650 in SLO on Friday which is very not my style, and I figured I would try the 200m breaststroke just to be weird I guess. It doesn’t seem like a really popular event so I can only lose to so many people, and I’m pretty sure I’ve never raced it in my life so this should be quite an experience. Plus it gives me a second event to race in on Sunday but happens early enough in the day that I can get on the road back towards home at a reasonable hour (Long Beach is a 4-5 hour drive for me). I was thinking about the 100m IM but it’s the last event of the day and I don’t think I can stick around that long. In the 100m fly I’m still trying to break 1:10, I hit 1:12 in Santa Clarita so I’m hoping I can drop another 2 seconds by December. In the 200m breaststroke I’m not even really sure what’s a good time, since I made my return to competitive swimming I’ve only swam a 50m breaststroke at Davis.
If you haven’t signed up for the meet yet I believe that you have until the 25th to do so. You can register online here
Name: Rebecca Friedlander
City and State: Denver, CO
Age Group: 40-44
Team Affiliation: CMS (Colorado Masters Swimming)
How long have you been swimming in Masters & why did you decide to join?
Hmmm…maybe 5-6 years now? At the time, I was working fulltime in fitness and the only place I could workout without anyone chasing me down with a phone was the pool. I realized how much I missed swimming on a team and competiting, so I joined a team shortly thereafter.
What kind of swimming background do you have? None at all, Age group, High School, College, International Competition, the Olympics?
Age group, scholastic, masters — all competitive.
Where do you swim and how often? Do you compete? If you do compete what are your favorite events to swim?
I swim all over the city and beyond seeking practices that are longer than an hour. Most weeks I get in 4-6 practices. My favorite events are long course (200 fly, 1500/800 free 400 IM) and open water races 5K and longer.
How does Swimming help you with your lifestyle (health, relationships, etc.)?
Swimming is the cornerstone of my life. It has taught me just about everything I know: setting and reaching goals, forming good discipline habits, cultivating patience, finding work/play/rest balance, and so much more. It’s introduced me to terrific people and places all over the world. And, swimming keeps me very healthy and in shape despite aging!
What do you do for a living out of the pool?
Full time freelance writer.
What do people (coworkers, friends) say when you tell them that you
are a masters swimmer?
So far everyone thinks it’s really cool and interesting and then they
ask a ton of questions.
How about swimming advocacy? Have you helped run or start a team? Are you involved with your LMSC? Do you have a blog or swimming website you’d like to share?
I am the self-proclaimed “swim evangelist.” My mission is to share swimming with as many people as I can as a way to give back to my sport because it’s given so much to me. I also do the COMSA quarterly newsetter, Master Splash, a swim blog (www.offthedeck.net) and volunteer when I can to help out anyway I can.
Anything else that you want to share? Have a great swimming story? Are you a record holder in your age group? Swimming tips?
Don’t even get me started here — I’m a writer after all!

If you would like to be featured on the blog or know another swimmer who would, check out the swimmer profile info page.
Just came across this cool piece of news over at Swimming World Magazine. 4 swimmers at the Santa Clarita SCM swim meet combined to break 5 different masters swimming world records!
Rita Simonton from Golden West Swim Club in Huntington Beach broke her own 90-94 age group records in the 200m free (4:24.90) and the 400m free (9:01.89).
Derya Buyukunca of Irvine Nova Masters Swimming who we talked about earlier this week in the blog broke the 30-34 record in the 100m back (53.63).
Jenny Cook from Southern California Aquatics broke the 50-54 age group record in the 100m breaststroke (1:20.72).
Robert Strand from The Olympic Club in San Rafael broke his own 60-64 age group record in the 100m IM (1:08.70).
Congratulations to all of you!

Jennifer is set to get going on December 1st and is hoping to wrap up her swim within about 60 days. To read more and see a video about her swim check out this article from the Miami Herald. And if you’re into Facebook you can become a fan of Jennifer Figge here.
I got back from my workout around 10PM and I’m feeling really good. My day started way off kilter… I was incredibly late for work which never happens, ever. I’m habitually early thanks to my mom and then this tendency was multiplied by military service. But today I slept an hour and a half past when I’m supposed to be in, whoops! Oh well, I guess one time ever is ok.
After work I made my way down to the beach and had some dinner. It was nice to sit outside, eat, and cool off after such a hot day. I almost didn’t go to the pool because I was feeling all run down from my weird day but something compelled me to get out there.
Once I got out on my bike everything clicked. It was a little after 8 at this point and super dark. There was a little bit of a breeze coming off the ocean and all was good in the world. At the gym I decided to just do a continuous block of swimming to reset my brain. I let my thoughts drift and kept a steady pace back and forth across the pool. I spent about 30 minutes cruising through the water for what I would guess was at least 2000 yards (I have a general inability to count out more than 200 yards in the pool). It got me thinking that I might want to deck enter the 1650 on Friday in San Luis Obispo. I usually don’t go for the distance stuff because I’m not a morning person but this is at 6 in the evening about 15 minutes from my house so I might just get my name on the list.
When I was done in the pool I soaked in the hot tub for a little bit and then made my way home. I probably rolled up to the door at about 10PM. I wonder how many other people there are out there that are night owl exercisers like me. If I could put together enough people locally I would love to have a “Midnight Masters” team that trained at the local high school pool after hours. Not likely, but a boy can dream right?
I decided to stay on dry land tonight and give my swimming muscles a break. I went with Heidi to the gym and spent about 20 minutes on the elliptical machine. Unfortunately due to an old back injury this is the closest I can get to actually running. It’s amazing how much of a workout it is to hop a machine that you don’t use too often. I’m still kind of curious to try the weird looking cross country skiing or speed skating motion machine… not totally sure what it’s supposed to be. Anyways, I looked like I just finished a 5k by the time I got off the elliptical.
When I was done I spent a few minutes playing in the weight room while Heidi wrapped up her workout. I don’t really have much of a game plan when I hit the weight room these days. I’ve been thinking that I should schedule some time with one of the trainers at the gym to help me build a good circuit to do in the weight room. Anybody out there have a good swim-centric weight routine that they do?
In other news… the Masters of South Texas linked to the blog today and helped spread the word on my Meet a Masters Swimmer project. Thanks to the folks at MOST for getting the word out and I hope to be able to feature a few of you here in the blog in the near future!
